For extracurricular activities, are leadership positions that aren't at the very top still good? For example, I'm head of light crew at my theatre, and the highest crew position is Stage Manager.

I'm asking because I'm the kind of person that enjoys filling certain niches, so really I wouldn't even want to be stage manager. Likewise with newspaper (I'm national/world news editor), except we don't even have an editor-in-chief right now.

What's your take on "middle-management" kinds of leadership positions?

It's unlikely that these positions will be decisive in your prospects unless they somehow relate to your application. E.g., if you hope to do lighting in theatrical productions in college, and write about that in an essay or short answer, then evidence of your experience could help. Otherwise, you'll get "credit" for a solid EC. That's not a bad thing. :)

It's great to be director of the play or editor of the newpaper, but even those don't stand out among CU applicants. Don't try to get involved in activities to accumulate leadership roles, particularly ones that don't interest you - it's far better to do something you have a passion for - either as part of an organized activity or on your own.
