For anyone who has time I have a question regarding extracurriculars. I am planning on applying to some of the Ivy’s and Stanford and other competitive schools, so I just wanted to see if people had any thoughts on this.
The bulk of my extracurriculars pertain to horseback riding, which I have been doing for about ten years. I am planning on trying to write about this creatively in my commonapp essay somehow to show how passionate I am about it. Within horseback riding, I compete a lot and am the captain of the team that I am on. Because it requires so much time and dedication, my EC’s are a little weak outside of the sport. I am a member of a lot of leadership groups at my school and tutor a lot and I am very involved in community service (I applied and was accepted to a competitive volunteer position at a local chapter of a well-known charity). But really compared to horseback riding, I don’t have a ton of other stuff that I have done.
So I guess my question is, will that hurt me? I keep hearing people say that colleges don’t always want ‘well-rounded’ students- now they really like passionate students who have devoted a lot of time to what they love doing. So, in everyone’s opinion, do you think that if I really play horseback riding up in my essay I will still be competitive for the very selective schools? I keep seeing people on this blog posting a litany of clubs and organizations that they are a part of, so I’m getting very nervous that, even though I have dedicated nearly all of my time to this sport that I really love, it won’t be enough:( Thoughts?
Sorry that was such a long-winded question but I would really appreciate any advice you all could offer! Thank you!
