I know that UVa provides an opportunity for first year students to apply to become an Echols Scholar and I wanted to know if anyone could give me any information on what the process is like, how difficult it is, etc.

Also, would I have to take entirely accelerated classes to become an Echols Scholar during my first year? I am thinking about doing a portfolio for the first year writing requirement but I may have decided too late and I am worried that it will hinder my chances.

Thank you so much for your help!

To exempt from the First Writing Requirement, they have to receive your portfolio by August 1st. You do still have time for that.

I applied for Echols after my first year, and found out about one month ago that I was accepted. Basically, from what I could tell by the other people who were accepted, you need a high GPA (at least a 3.6), and you need some type of involvement in extracurriculars.

As for course load, obviously the more rigorous the better. However, I mainly took 1000’s level classes, with a few 2000’s mixed in. Overall, though, my rigor was fairly low.

The app was 3 essays, and was relatively quick and painless. PM me if you have any more questions!
