I am a first year who applied to be an Echols Scholar.

Is there an unofficial GPA cut off or grade cut off (e.g. a "C+" in foreign language) that will result in an applicants rejection from the program? Is there anything else I can do to possibly increase my chances? Such emailing them about newly acquired leadership roles, or summer internships at prestigious company?

I had a 100% killer (magnificent) essay.

Please do not sugarcoat your responses lol.

It would be nice to hear from an upper class student, or parent of a student, who has gone through the application process.

SIDE NOTE:

I am Hispanic and I blatantly said this in my essay. Is there (official or unofficial) affirmative action to Echols?

I’m. It quite sure what you mean by applying to be an Echols Scholar. When applying to UVA, you don’t also apply to Echols, you are just chosen by admissions.

You can apply your first semester to Echols and that’s where you write the essay, which is what I did. If you have a good resume and good essay, you should be fine. Not sure Hispanic will help here, and you should’ve included all your great qualities in your resume / essay. I think you’ll be fine! Good luck!

I write this assuming you mean 1st year as in you just finished your first year at UVA. The average GPA of accepted applicants is 3.6 and they only care about your grades at uva. I’m pretty sure they don’t care about affirmative action and i feel like that is a bit strange to try to bank on, but whatever. If you’re essay is truly as good as you say you will probably get in assuming you don’t have a 3.0 or something like that.
