Hey everyone, I just got a call from a UVA student saying that I am "a strong candidate for the Echols Scholars Program at UVA." I am taking this to be like a likely letter, and I am very excited!

Now that I have some hope for the school, I was wondering if anyone knew how many of the Science Scholars are also Echols, and if they is any relation between the two. I think they are evaluated separately, but I would hope they wouldn't give you only one. Getting both of those designations would make UVA an almost impossible offer to refuse (I am in state).

Yes, I applied to arts and sciences. I thought that the College Science Scholars Program was given to students within the College of Arts and Sciences, though, as shown by this link: College Science Scholars Program

I'm sorry, yeswecan, but I don't understand what your post meant. Did you think I meant the Rodman Scholars when I said Science Scholars in the previous post?

Hey GuitarRckr I can't confidently answer any of your questions, but I just wanted to say congrats. I know someone who also got a likely letter in the winter, and then her Echols letter came in the same packet as the admissions letter.

I got a call like this too, but really have no clue what it means. Does it mean my chances of admission just...skyrocketed?

Also if it's just for arts & sciences, will it apply to me if I want to do McIntire after 2 years of arts & sciences (since that's what's required, right?).

I'm both Echols and a College Science Scholar.
I know some people who are in the virginia society, which is the group that calls kids who have been chosen for echols/rodman. So if you got one, it means that you're in at UVA and the echols program. Congrats!
CSS is kind of an obscure program...basically your first year you have a 2-credit seminar where you listen to presentations by science professors. Once in a while there's a get-together with the scholars from other years or with professors from various departments. It's fun, but it's not hard to get into research without it. Mostly it's an easy 2 credits.

College Science Scholars are Echols Scholars. If you got that phone call, you're probably at least going to be admitted, and most likely will get into the Echols program. If you have Echols caliber numbers in the first place, you should have known that you'd get into UVa anyway.

Echols admits usually receive acceptance letters relativelye early, too. I received mine in mid-march '05, and I believe it's been about the same in recent years.

Really, will0w? What year are you? A dean told me otherwise during my first year. But I just checked the CSS and Echols websites, and it appears you're right.
