Eclectic homeschooler + swimmer

We’re new to the concept of BS. My son has been home educated, using an eclectic method, since Grade 3. He routinely tests in the 97-99th percentile on required end of year assessment. (I feel these exams are not particularly challenging, but he is definitely intelligent and capable.)

He has an August birthday, and was always the youngest in his grade when enrolled in private day, and public elementary. He was socially and academically ready, and did very well.

We began homeschooling after relocating to an area with truly limited options, and found a relaxed, eclectic approach suited our family well. My son has participated in a variety of extracurriculars, and is a promising age group swimmer. He also volunteers, and enjoys several styles of dance and gymnastics.

I am planning to repeat 7th Grade this fall, with a more academic focus, and preparation for SSATs. (He is not yet 13, so hopefully this will not be seen as a negative?) I feel his math skills need review in order to attain a score in line with his true academic ability. He is mature for his age, and often complimented on his comfort and confidence in a variety of situations. I think BS would be an amazing opportunity, as he really needs true peers to challenge him. He has spent the majority of the past few summers away from home, at camp and wilderness programs.

Additionally, I’m a single, disabled mother, so we would require financial aid. It seems many of the better known schools offer free tuition at our income level if accepted, but I want to find the best fit rather than a scattershot approach to top programs, which may be overextended reaches to begin with.

Can anyone suggest schools we may overlook, particularly those which have demonstrated openness towards non-traditional homeschooling methods? I have found Buxton, and The Putney School, but neither has a swim team. We live in rural New Hampshire, which makes visiting East Coast schools easy, but we are open to options in other parts of the US.

Thank you in advance!

Pm’d you

Mercersburg (PA), Peddie (NJ), St. Andrews (DE), Deerfield (MA), and Loomis Chafee (CT) all have good swim teams.

I agree if your son is smart, he has a chance to get great financial aid. Has he been away from home at all? You may want to do a summer camp or something so the schools are confident he will not be homesick at a BS.

No, repeating 7th with Aug bday will not be seen as negative. BS tend to like kids that are more mature for the grade. And if this helps him have time to prepare, that can help the strength of his application.

@Anthor My son is a rising senior (VI former) at St. Andrew’s School DE. He is on the swim team and hopes to continue swimming in college as a DIII athlete. He loves the ceramics program and is very active in technical theatre. The dance program at SAS is also quite good. I would recommend a tour to see if SAS would be a good fit for your son. Feel free to PM me for more information.

Thank you both! @NCSwimmom I’m going to make coffee, and take a look at SAS. It is one I hadn’t stumbled upon yet, and your description sounds great.

@sunnyschool He has spent the majority of the past several summers away from home, at traditional camp and wilderness school programs. His love of those community experiences is actually what initially started this process. He had one minor episode of homesickness a few years ago, but handled it well. It was his first trip outside of the US (only to Canada, but felt far away to an 11 yo.) He has also had some misadventures, such as needing a bad cut trimmed (eek!) and stitched while away at camp. The physician called me and was impressed by how DS was interested in the healing process, was really mature and advanced for his age, etc. Maybe one of his additional references should be from camp?

Sorry for the novel. He’s a truly extroverted homeschooler. The “home” part isn’t really accurate for us. Having access to so many activities and extracurriculars would be nothng short of amazing for DS. (And for Mom’s Taxi!)

I’m also looking at JBS as a possible transition.

@Anthor - Great! I think he is an excellent candidate for BS! Good luck and keep in touch here!

Northfield Mount Hermon has a swim team and a progressive bent that seems like a good fit. Very strong arts too. Its bigger than Buxton or Putney but a very friendly accepting place with a bigger endowment to match.

@chemmchimney Thank you! I think I was a bit overwhelmed initially, as it took me a few days before
I thought to look at NMH. A friend
of mine from Middle School attended NMH a million years ago, and I vaguely remember
playing a tennis match and preseason basketball scrimmage there myself, back in the Dark Ages. It is a really
unique school, with quite a bit that fits-- on paper at least. Love the farm, the work program, and really everthing
I’ve seen online so far. Had to tease my poor mom for not sending me as a teen. Wonder if they’d accept
a 45 year-old repeat PG?

@Anthor I’m an NMH parent (class of 2016). Feel free to PM me! I too would enroll in a second- loved the teachers my dd had
