We’re new to the concept of BS. My son has been home educated, using an eclectic method, since Grade 3. He routinely tests in the 97-99th percentile on required end of year assessment. (I feel these exams are not particularly challenging, but he is definitely intelligent and capable.)
He has an August birthday, and was always the youngest in his grade when enrolled in private day, and public elementary. He was socially and academically ready, and did very well.
We began homeschooling after relocating to an area with truly limited options, and found a relaxed, eclectic approach suited our family well. My son has participated in a variety of extracurriculars, and is a promising age group swimmer. He also volunteers, and enjoys several styles of dance and gymnastics.
I am planning to repeat 7th Grade this fall, with a more academic focus, and preparation for SSATs. (He is not yet 13, so hopefully this will not be seen as a negative?) I feel his math skills need review in order to attain a score in line with his true academic ability. He is mature for his age, and often complimented on his comfort and confidence in a variety of situations. I think BS would be an amazing opportunity, as he really needs true peers to challenge him. He has spent the majority of the past few summers away from home, at camp and wilderness programs.
Additionally, I’m a single, disabled mother, so we would require financial aid. It seems many of the better known schools offer free tuition at our income level if accepted, but I want to find the best fit rather than a scattershot approach to top programs, which may be overextended reaches to begin with.
Can anyone suggest schools we may overlook, particularly those which have demonstrated openness towards non-traditional homeschooling methods? I have found Buxton, and The Putney School, but neither has a swim team. We live in rural New Hampshire, which makes visiting East Coast schools easy, but we are open to options in other parts of the US.
Thank you in advance!
