Hello! I recently got accepted to Colby as an Ecology major. I am interested in pursuing something along the lines of conservation, field biology, marine biology, and environmental science. What resources are available for a prospective student like me? Does Colby have good programs in these fields? I understand there’s the Bigelow Lab, but how hard is it to get a spot researching there? Thank you so much!
@annielee0134, chiming in as just the father of a prospective student like you… no knowledge of the relative strengths of Colby’s biology program; I do know that the environmental studies program is generally well-regarded (I am in that field myself).
I also know that Bigelow’s focus seems more on the micro-biology of the oceans, not so much larger animals (if that is what you are interested in). That said, there is some connection between Bigelow and the State of Maine’s Department of Marine Resources (before building their new campus in East Boothbay, Bigelow was leasing most of its facilities from the DMR in West Boothbay Harbor), so that might provide expanded opportunities.
Good luck in your decision making!
Oh, I don’t mind that particular focus at all! In my opinion, we ultimately need to study the micro-biology of the ocean in order to help the larger animals living in it. Again, thank you so much! That gave me a much better idea on the resources that Bigelow has to offer. I didn’t know that they recently expanded into East Boothbay!
