Sooo...what are you guys actually getting from the lectures? (except iclicker points) Have you opened the textbook? (lol that guy today... man was he ****ed hahaha)

Lol at the guy today… No idea why he asked… I’m behind in the reading since I didn’t realize there was a textbook reading. I thought Dasgupta was the txtbook since I got it via a pdf… Going to catch up this weekend ;).

not gonna lie…it was kinda on my mind too, but who actually says that?!? lol but I have retained absolutely nothing from lecture. I go from I’m getting it! to okayy…to do I need to care?..to I’m sleeeppyyy and finally ***?

I knew about it…but kinda pushed it off since my gsi is super chill I need to catch up too haha

what happened? I must know. I was in that class but then I dropped because frankly, Delong seemed like a crap professor. I’m sure he’s smart and all, but teaching-wise…

On a side note, he was on the this board once like 2 years ago.

He seems a bit… obtuse at times, but he definitely knows what he is talking about. A good GSI (Like Huff) may be the make or break part of this course. Put in a good amount of time and you should be set. Also, that poor guy.

^What happened?

Well, yeah, the guy’s a genius. I’ve heard he aced harvard’s math 55 and could read books super fast and remember EVERYTHING. (an article on the harvard crimson or something)…but he assumes we all are too. I really don’t like the whole you’re berkeley students so I don’t have to teach you what you “need” attitude. And thankfully, he won’t be able to trace our names down or anything haha. Yeah, my GSI is awesome - I’m hoping that’s all we need for the tests.

@batman: so basically, in the middle of lecture (when he started going on a tangent) a guy asked something like “so why do we need to know this for the problem set?” and Delong asked to repeat…so he did…and then got super mad and went on about how we’re berkeley students, not DVC, and they expect us to learn a lot, so lectures, readings, sections and textbook will all be different and that we should learn it all…and that he isn’t going to teach us all that stuff and blah blah. We spent a good 10 mins in section talking about it…my gsi didn’t even want to turn around to see if it was one of his kids haha

I would drop, but I have to pay now and can’t do anything about the books haha…and I’m lazy?

Anyway, real question: Is anyone getting anything from lecture? Am I just mildly ■■■■■■■■?

If you download the podcast of lec 5, you can skip to like 23:30 and it goes until like 28:30

It wasn’t all that bad or anything…the guy who asked was just pwned haha

I haven’t learned anything from his lectures, either. :[ He gets off topic way too often so I drift off a lot. I notice that as each lecture goes by, I pay less and less attention…

There is so much reading too… I’m worried about how he’ll write his exams… If there are nitpick reading questions, I’m screwed :(!

I took Econ 1 in fall 2010 with Delong. To be honest, I thought all his lectures were irrelevant (or most of it) to the problem sets. I just took naps during the lecture, woke up whenever there was a iclicker question, and went back to sleep. I always went to GSI OH for problem sets. For the random books, do you guys still have quizzes? We had quizzes, and then for the final, he made us write two essays on two of the books…

haha just listened to his podcast… sounds like same old Delong!

lol oh delong… any of you guys ever watch his morning podcast show where he drinks coffee the whole time?

We don’t have quizzes. Instead we have one 3-mn oral presentation & 2 short essays (I think 1 page each) for the outside reading. Was the reading emphasized a lot in the exam totalcaprice?

I also took Econ 1 with DeLong 2 years ago and I’d say the reading wasn’t too emphasized; as long as you paid attention during the oral presentations/read the abstracts/had some idea of what was going on in the books you could answer the questions reasonably well.

I think the quizzes were a by-GSI thing; we had quizzes in my section but my GSI said she was only using them for attendance purposes.

hahaha not alone! Awesome. His lectures makes my brain feel fuzzy.

I kept up with dasgupta until this (last?) weekend…still haven’t opened the textbook…I hope the problem sets and a brain are all we’ll need to get an A.

Has anyone found the textbook actually critical? I still have not managed to find one.

^ I may potentially drop the course…if I do end up dropping it (if I get into a 1 unit something), and if you still don’t have one I can sell you mine…

Our GSI said that the textbook was helpful… I still need to start reading, but I feel like it’ll help if you have no economics background.

meep that would be terrific.
