I'm required to take ECON 101, and since I'm not a math person, I'm pretty nervous about it! I've heard quite a few horror stories about how hard it is. Has anyone taken it? Is there a recommended professor?

Ok, Econ is not that much math. It is a lot of graph reading and interpreting, but that is really the most math you do. Byrnes occasionally said that certain things were derivatives and integrals, but never actually tested people on it.

As far as who to take, I would go ahead and take Byrnes. He gives out up to 100 pts worth of extra-credit, so basically an entire letter grade if you do it all.

One word of warning, you do have to do work to do well in the class. And a lot of people I know don’t recommend taking it your first semester. Just because 1st semester, no one really knows how to study for college. Or at least most people don’t. I still don’t and I’m gonna be a junior. :-P

I’ve heard the same things about Byrnes - he is good but hard.

Hey, sorry to hijack this thread, I’ve got a quick question.
My CTOPS is in August. I have a rough idea of which courses I want to / should take. Do I have to wait till CTOPS to register for em?

blue_box - yes!

Does anyone know how closely Econ 101 resembles the AP class? If I did well in the AP class, will I be fine in Econ 101?

I’m a pre-frosh taking econ 101 in summer school and I DID take econ ap senior year in high school. You will be ‘very’ prepared. I hardly have to read or pay attention in class

“Ericmodify”, who are you taking it with? What is Econ class like during the summer?

If you’re not an econ person, I wouldn’t recommend taking it with Turchi. I had him and he is pretty tough. I have heard that Byrnes is good if you aren’t naturally good at math/econ.

I was pretty nervous about Econ too (I’m not a math person) but it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought. Econ 101 is more an introduction to the vocabulary and theories of economics. The recitation sections help a lot, you can ask your TA questions when you don’t understand anything. As packer said, I would just recommend doing all the reading/work and possibly joining a study group, and you should be fine.
