Econ @ Berkeley vs. BusAdmin @ USC

Study Business Administration at Marshall School of Business @USC or Economics at Cal Berkeley? I've been accepted to both schools, and am having trouble deciding! Where would you attend and why? Pros and cons of each? All opinions and suggestions are appreciated!

Wait...I don't understand.

When would you be attending either of these schools? Because the deadline to submit your intent to register was quite some time ago. Instruction at UC Berkeley starts in six weeks, and I'm sure USC is quite soon as well.

maybe he or she has been admitted for the spring terms.... I would choose berkeley because it is not only much much cheeper, but the social atmosphere at cal is much better as well. Both have very good programs, and if you care a lot about prestige, economics at berkeley will look much better than bus admin at USC... thats just my two cents

Ah, I see. I am sorry - I was not thinking about spring admits. Whoops!

Anyway, I agree with the above poster. I would go with Cal for the prestige, quality of program, and social aspects.

I read in another of your posts that you appealed and got in at Berkeley. My question is why you even went through the trouble of appealing and taking someone elses spot if you weren't sure you even want to come here.

The deadline for Freshmen Spring Admits was May 1, while the deadline for Transfer Spring Admits was June 2.

If you did indeed appeal a decision, I would imagine that the deadline has already passed, but then again I could be wrong.

If you got into USC without having to appeal, wouldn't you have already needed to accept or decline their offer of admission? Did you also get into USC for the spring?

Also, if you appealed UC Berkeley, I would imagine you really wanted to attend. I agree with the above poster; there are so many people dying to get in to Cal that would have submitted their intent as soon as they were aware that their appeal had been honored. I'm kind of confused that you're still trying to decide this last in the game, and especially after your appeal went through - a process that isn't easy.

I appealed Berkeley just for the heck of it. I never thought I had a chance. So me being admitted for Spring 2006 was a total surprise. USC barely admitted me 2 days ago for Fall 2005.

USC is a good school, and of course it would be nice to start school in the fall.
However, Berkeley is superior in the academic realm, and in my opinion, would offer a better all around experience. Yes, this is coming from someone who is starting Cal in the fall, but I grew up in SoCal, been to USC many times, and know several students who attend, or have attended in the past.

go for USC business admin. about half of all people who study econ in college end up teaching it. and plus Berkeley is a nice school, yeah, but it's sooooo liberal. USC is alot more laid-back, yet has a good academic program.

That's actually a stereotype. Cal is very diverse, and has a huge Republican/Conservative club. A degree from Berkeley holds more weight than a degree from USC. Besides, you could always go on to get your MBA.

If you want to stay in SoCal, go with USC. It will hold more "weight," but if you plan on working anywhere else go with Cal.

Well I go to USC and my sister, mom and aunt all went to Cal so I am quite familiar with both schools. I was in the business program for a while at USC (switched to accounting) and it was a very good program, but I think the main thing you need to figure out is if you want to study business or economics. The business major at USC covers a broad range of topics with econ being only a tiny portion of it. If you enjoy econ, I would suggest Cal, however if you would rather have a program that gives you a general understanding of the main business concepts and a slightly more focused look at a single topic than choose USC.

How come your only limiting yourself to Economics at Cal? Cal offers a Business Admin degree and is one of the best known business schools in the country

Once you get to Cal, you apply to Haas as a junior. If you are a junior transfer, and you didn't apply into Haas right out of community college, you can apply your second semester of your junior year.
