Econ Major - Theory Track

Can any econ major doing the theory track describe what the major is like? Is the theory track significantly harder than the policy track due to the math involved? How do math/econ joint majors in CAS fare against Sternies in terms of jobs and internships?

My sisters an econ major. She hates the sterns students and they generally look down on other majors at NYU.

Hmmm, sometimes I can imagine that Stern kids could look down at other NYU colleges. To really pis s them off you should get a better internship then them, it is entirely possible depending on how you market yourself. NYU is NYU is NYU. Many employers look at the institution as a whole, not as separate parts since many Stern students and students from various other NYU colleges take courses in CAS. Nothing to worry about. Everyone wants to think their college is better. You can’t compare apples and oranges can you?

Anyone have any thoughts specifically about the theory track for econ majors?

hey nyu123, i’m a freshman on the econ theory track. to answer your question, YES theory is a lot more math intensive and rigorous than policy. Intro to Economic Analysis is the first class you take in the major; the prerequisite for it is Calc I which I waived with APs, and you have to take Calc II concurrently. It was a challenging class - lots of equations, calculus, graphical analysis, problem sets - that’s econ theory for you. i encourage you to do theory if you like and are good at math… it’s rewarding; you really do learn a lot.

if you get GOOD GRADES in the math/econ theory major and have good social skills, you definitely will not be at disadvantage when compared to sternies. especially if you’re going into quantitative finance. you may even be at an advantage because doing well in math/econ theory means you have great analytical and quantitative skills. just my two cents.

@hereisnewyork: Was it hard to maintain a good GPA while you took Calc II + Intro to Econ Analysis? I’m curious because I plan on taking both classes 1st semester of Freshman year, and I may or may not try to transfer into Stern right after that.

And thanks so much for the response, it’s exactly what I was looking for.

bumpity bump.

i managed to maintain a 3.7 but i worked my tail off for it. you can’t expect to get good grades without doing the work (or maybe you can if you’re a mathematical GENIUS, which i am not :P). MAP courses like WTE and Conwest really boosted my GPA though. And yes, definitely take both classes 1st semester. It’s hard but manageable, and you can get a taste of what theory is like. if you don’t like it, you can just switch to policy the next semester.
