Econ Major Workload

Hey,
I was just wondering what is the typical workload of someone that's an econ major.

And if any of you care to answer, if i'm looking for a position in hospital administration, is econ the way to go? Maybe sociology? I know that Columbia doesn't have a public health major or something similar.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!!

alright hmmm…

I’m an IEOR major and I’m studying an minor in economics. The difference in the minor and major between SEAS and CC is 3 electives and 1 seminar. The workload for the economics major depends on your ability. Compared to my engineering classes, economics classes are always the breather in my semester. They’re not that quantitative, curved fairly well, and plus the class isn’t always bright when it comes to basic mathematics.

The professors are fantastic and for all my classes, I didn’t even need a textbook. I went to class, took notes and paid attention, and did the homework. I usually got an A in the course with relative ease, 2-5 hours of homework each week with the amount of time spent usually hovering around the lower end.

No idea about hospital administration. If that’s the way you want to go then you should probably look into specific programs that offer this, because I’m not sure if I know anyone studying economics who is going into that field. Most economics majors are looking into fields in investment banking.

Thanks a lot!

What do you think about the teaching and gradng of Iyengar and his TAs?

I feel that Iyengar talks way too fast in his class!

bump…

could someone also describe the workload in operations research?

They dont have the operations research major anymore i believe

Operations research is significantly harder than economics. More problem sets, harder problem sets, and on top of that way more programming. Compounding the problem is a lack of teaching quality. Professors really put in minimal effort for a lot of classes and test material way harder than was taught. It’s a struggle and a grind. I’m sure you don’t want to hear that, but others can speak to the major. Let me know if you want me to talk about certain classes.

Yes, the Econ-OR program is gone. I remember econ kids talking about how rigorous Econ-OR was. Really a joke of a program seeing as they do a total of 3-5 classes in the OR major.

The econ professors are great. In terms of major requirements/classes:

[Economics | Columbia College](<a href=“Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University”>Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University)

Some of the IEOR professors are not good at teaching… (Iyengar / Sethuraman)…

I think it’d be better to name good IEOR professors rather than list off all the bad ones, cause they’re pretty much all terrible.

Chudnovsky, Kachani

What about the Financial Econ professors?

and bump-ing my original post, the work load? is it hard to achieve a balance between studies and social life?
