I scored 5s on the AP Micro and Macro exams during junior year. Despite the fact that our teacher was pretty bad, It was probably the favorite class I have taken during high school, purely out of the interest I hold for the subject. I breezed through the course and I actually enjoyed taking the exams.

I now plan on majoring in Econ and already have the calculus requirement fulfilled, but I'm not sure if I will pass the placement test. Anybody here have any experience with the exam? Does it test material that isn't necessarily tested in AP? And should I review my notes from last year ( I still have them) just in case I'm rusty?

I wouldn't have a problem with taking Econ 198 and 199, especially if I'm not prepared for 200, but because I am thinking about double majoring I'd like to get started as quickly as I can.

I haven’t taken the placement exam, but I believe that it’s only required for students wanting to take Econ 200 in their first year. I opted, instead, to complete as much of the core & math as possible during my first year in order to have more flexibility in my second and third years. This way, I started ECON 200 my second year, never had to take 198 and 199 (which are good courses but altogether unnecessary to be successful in the econ core) and was able to focus more on electives and other interesting courses earlier than my peers because I had gotten most of the core out of the way.

As per double majoring, whether or not you should start 200 in the first or second year depends on the second major. It may be a good idea to begin that major your first year and hold off on econ until your second year (instead of vice versa), but I wouldn’t recommend diving into both majors your first year.

I’ll only have to do Core classes in humanities and bio, otherwise I place out due to some AP classes.

Perhaps I should have made myself more clear. I plan on double majoring in political science and economics, but political science would definitely be my first major. I’m actually not sure if I wish to pursue economics at a high level that involves calculus and much more difficult concepts. That would require my taking of a few classes to see what it’s like. Otherwise, I may choose to focus exclusively on Political Science, or switch out economics for another major, such as IR (which I plan on studying in graduate school). I just want to keep my options as open as possible down the road.

Fortunately, all of the subjects I am potentially interested in have significant overlap. I just wanted to know how difficult or different the placement exam was compared to the AP exam.
