We've all seen in the news the sour US economy with little indication things will soon turn around. It's already a very competitive field, but now it just seems like it's going to be even more cut-throat? Should I switch from my Finance major?

While Investment Banking and the more glamorous financial jobs will be harder to get into, I'm sure you can look elsewhere such as Corp Fin/M&A at a Fortune 500.

Or accounting....

Accounting is a safe bet. Possibly consulting with all the problems going on now hahaha.

There are actually likely to be more accounting jobs (especially in the regulatory field) once the election is over and the new Congress takes up how to prevent another credit crisis like this in the future. There are also likely to be more consulting jobs since companies will need advice on spreading their financial risk in a more effective way.

I wouldn't switch out of the business major.

When people think of finance they always go straight towards investment banking. You're forgetting about the multitude of corporate finance jobs that exist and will continue to exist as long as companies are around.

It really depends on your interests, Finance and Accounting are very similar; hence why many people end up majoring in both because so many of the classes overlap. Now, if you're a junior or senior and have already taken classes towards the Finance major I would say stick with it if you're interested in it. However, if you're still pre i-core or in i-core right now, you shouldn't worry too much about your major. Most people don't take specific classes for their major until the second semester of their Junior year.

Stick with what you like, for all we know wall street will be booming in a month from now.

If you like it stick with it. There will be jobs again.
