Economics at NYU

Hello, I'm an international student, and I got accepted to C of A&S about two weeks ago. So I want to major in economics, and from my researches about the department, Economics is pretty strong at NYU. Still, I wanted to hear any comments about studying Econ at NYU from an NYU student, or perhaps a parent. Is it really one of the strongest programs in US? Is it internationally acknowledged? How do Americans view Econ at NYU? And, lastly, what are the differences between the econ program at CofArts and Sciences and Stern? I know that Stern is very prestigious, would studying econ at Stern be a completely different experience?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a business econ major at Stern. First off, Econ at NYU in general is very strong and one of their best programs. The econ department at Stern works very closely with the CAS department and a couple of the upper level econ classes are actually taken at CAS. Obviously, the experience will be very different because at CAS the curriculum is liberal arts based while Stern's is business based.

Right now, I'm taking microeconomics, a required course for Stern that is mostly taken in freshman year. This same course is considered an intermediate/advanced course at CAS. I think this has to do with the level of math required. I have a friend who is taking micro in CAS and most problems require only basic algebra. My micro class, however, is very calculus-based.

Thanks for your response!

I have to ask one more question; so if I went to CAS, would I have a chance to switch to Econ at Stern at the end of the first year? Or is it like impossible because Stern is already very selective? Do you know anyone who transferred from CAS to Stern?

Thanks

i don't personally know anyone who transferred into Stern, but i've heard it's difficult. The amount of spots available depends on how many people in Stern decide to transfer out.

also, as an econ major at cas you can participate in Stern clubs.
