Economics Major Inquiry

I’m writing to this forum to inquire about the requirements of the Economics program. I have already been accepted to FSU, but I have a question about my transitioning into junior year (from community college with AA). I have Pre-Calc, Trig, Statistics, intro to micro/macro. I’ve read at all other schools I have looked into and they require Calculus I for beginning level economics classes (ECO3101 Intermediate Microeconomics). FSU’s degree map suggests Calculus I before junior level starts, as well as taking Calculus II the first term of junior year. However, FSU’s economics course list do not include Calculus as a prerequisite until senior level coursework. I suppose I do want to prepare for a master’s and that would require Calculus I-III (I believe). Ugh, the summer term just sounds like such an awful time to take it.

So yeah, heading into summer term, I could take Calculus I but it would be inconvenient. Would it be better had I took it in summer term and continued on to Calculus II in the fall? Does neglecting Calculus I before fall term affect me very much? Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Econ major here!

If you want to get your doctorate in economics, Calculus 1-3 is a MUST. For a master’s degree, it is sometimes recommended depending on the school. FSU’s 1-year econ master’s program (if that’s what you’re considering) does not require any calculus. I am not sure about others. As for when you take Calculus I, it’s really up to you. Taking it in Summer or Fall really shouldn’t make any difference, as long as you have enough time to complete Calc I-III (if that’s how far you want to go).

Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them!

Also, I took Intermediate Micro before taking Calc I and I had no issues at all. The professor should teach you the (very small amount) of calculus needed for the course.

Thank you @daniellefsu. I suppose every school has their own program and requirements. I really would hate my summer to be filled with math lol, so yeah I guess I’ll take it in the fall and just do consecutive calc I-III. Can’t wait. Thank you again
