Economics majors, are the teachers that bad?

<a href="http://ru-observer.com/2013/03/14/the-marginal-costs-of-economics-at-rice/">http://ru-observer.com/2013/03/14/the-marginal-costs-of-economics-at-rice/</a></p>

Is this true? Current economic majors, can you please tell me about the program and hopefully tell me it has wonderful teachers?

I waited a while before posting with the hope that someone else with more experience would respond. I was not an econ major, but took a couple of classes.

My takeaways

 1. Get a Math Econ degree if you can
 2. A lot of econ majors are focused on their careers (which is a good thing)
 3. The intro/mid level professors are accomplished but boring as hell.

I don’t fully agree with one general premise of the article - somehow Rice needs to make economics inspiring (or something to that respect) for students. To me, college is a place for people to learn skills for their future and if you hate economics classes but it launches you into a career you want in a related field, I have no issues with it whatsoever.

@Antarius‌ I was just shocked that the article claimed that all the professors were cold and unapproachable, and that the classes were overly technical and overwhelmingly difficult. Based on your experience, was the author exaggerating or is that the actual feel of the department as a whole?

I never got the cold and unapproachable vibe. I just didn’t care for their in class teaching. That said, I wasn’t an econ major so I moonlighted in the classes, so maybe that was part of it.

Not sure whats the issue with “overwhelmingly difficult”. Life isn’t easy, so making people earn their degrees isn’t a big deal
