I know Rice has a national reputation for engineering. How about math and economics? Does anyone have any insight or comments. Our son was admitted ID and we are making comparisons now with his other options. Thanks!

well I know they have a very good math department. when i was there for the weekend the math department director was really impressing.

Hi Lukester! I hope you got my P.M. reply. I can't help you with math and economics, and I'm not sure that the kids on this forum can either. (Many haven't attended Rice yet.) Perhaps your son could contact some math and econ majors at Rice and ask their opinion of the department? Or find out where they go on to graduate school. I haven't hunted for this information, but I'm sure it is available from Rice or online somewhere. (By the way, most kids end up in different majors than they expected, so your son might want to ask kids in other majors he's interested in also.) Hopefully after Owl weekend, he'll get a better feel for if Rice is the school for him or not.

Thank you anxious for all your help. I did get your PM. Great info. We are in that soul searching phase. Despite the generous scholarship offer, Rice is still very very expensive for us. We are looking at all angles.

Econ is not ranked as highly at rice, but that is mainly based on the graduate program. The math department is very good. I hear you about the money issue, you may want to look into transfering into Rice after a year or two so you dont have to pay for 4 years of college.
