I’m currently undeclared major in Fox. I am good at Math and like economics. I’m considering a major in Economics and a minor in Math vs Actuarial Science. But I worry more about the job market. Is a BBA in economics at fox and a minor in Math good enough? Is Actuarial Science a better choice?
My son is a senior in HS considering Temple for their full scholarship and excellent Actuarial Science degree program. I would have to ask what your plans are after college, if you want to be an actuary (which is listed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top 10 professions for the last 20 years based on income, job availability, stress , environments etc) then its a no brainer go for the actuary science degree- as they give you the knowledge to pass the first 2 actuary exams while still in college. This means you can get out and become an actuary assistant making approx 64k a year while studying for the next exams at the expense of you employer… but you really are limited to becoming an actuary. It is a profession that has a current 98% employment rate and the majority of actuaries are 59yrs old …meaning the job market isn’t likely to dry up anytime soon.
If you aren’t sold on the actuary life a degree in Economics and math gives you unlimited options… but I’m thinking you need to perhaps go to graduate school to specialize.
For actuaries, the society of Actuaries has a great website and Temple is a one of about 15 schools that are a center of actuarial excellence
