Economics vs Business Major

Hi,

I am new to College Confidential and am looking for some help in deciding majors. I am currently debating between an Economics major with a concentration in Finance or a Business major with a concentration in Finance. I really want to get into the world of finance and work with stocks, I am just unsure which of those two paths would be the better one to take. From what I understand, econ tends to be more theoretical while bus is more practical. However, I was wondering if it even makes much difference since Im planning on doing a finance concentration in whichever one I pick.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums! Could you clarify as to what you mean when you say “work with stocks”? Do you mean you want to be a stockbroker? It is my understanding that being a stockbroker typically doesn’t require any specific degree, although any general business related degree would be helpful. I would assume equal opportunities with either major you listed.

Something to keep in mind is that Economics is a social science major, not a business major. It is in the same category as government, sociology, etc. It is more theoretical, as you stated, but majorly deals with how society will react to money-related situations. What I am trying to say is, finance and business are more related than economics and finance.

I think business has more to do with an individual’s or a corporations relationship with money, like how to invest it, how to save it, etc. And I feel like in business you would learn how banks, stocks and the like work, whereas, in economics, you would learn whether society will withdraw or deposit money in the bank or whether it will invest in a stock depending on a certain situation.

Latin4Life: That helps quiet a bit thanks

My advice is to do your own research on the fields instead of accepting what unqualified people are telling you. Taking anything for granted is a terrible move for your future. Talk to your professors specifically, they’re the best resource you have in high school.
