Economics vs Computer Science

Hello

I'm currently at a 2 year college and will be transferring to Northern Illinois University next year in Fall.

I originally wanted to do Computer Science because I like computers and the job and salary prospects for software engineering are amazing, but recently I took a intro to programming class and I was bored out of my skull. I like computers but I just could not get into programming. I just couldn't get into it and thought if this is really what I wanted to do for the rest of my working days.

I enjoy math, I took both pre calc and pre calc trig and will be taking Calc 1 this spring.

I recently took a class in macro economics and I loved it. I was really into the material and enrolled in Microeconomics for Spring.

I'm thinking of switching from CS to Econ. I wanted to know

How are the job prospects with a B.S. in Economics?
Is it a respected degree?
Is it worth jumping from CS to Econ considering the CS prospects? I don't know if I want to do programming for a career.

Any info would be great, thanks.

Hi,

I’m an economics major + paid programmer. I wouldn’t judge the career side of an economics degree based on a macroeconomics class. Very few economics majors actually do ‘economics’ after graduation. A lot of economics grads become financial analysts, accountants or go into marketing. Have you taken accounting or finance classes yet? Those are likely more similar to what you’ll be doing at work.

Thanks for the responses guys, I enjoy math and I did enjoy the Economics class I took. While I most likely won’t be an actual economist, I thought it might be a good idea to do something in college that I enjoy, I really just want to know about the prospects of a BS on Econ.

Why was it boring? What did you do in class? What were the projects about?
Was it hard or easy?
