economics

I have heard UChicago has one of (if not the) best econ department in the country. I am planning on going there and majoring in econ, but I am terrified. I never had an advanced econ class in high school and I have no reason to believe I have any talents in econ, only that I think I will like it.

My question is: If I major in econ, will I ever have spare time? how rigorous is the econ dept and will it consume me?

any help woudl be appreciated.

Look, you're going to face a difficult time at Chicago academically, but that doesn't mean you get NO free time.

Don't worry about it.

"I never had an advanced econ class in high school and I have no reason to believe I have any talents in econ, only that I think I will like it."

There are 2 basic economic classes at the U of C, macro and microeconomics (which I believe are 19800 and 19900). You can take these for a solid foundation in the basics, as well as seeing if you're interested in pursuing it as a major.

Also, check out the book "Naked Economics," by Charles Wheelan. Not only is it a very readable, interesting book, it is also one of the books read in the classes I just mentioned.

198 and 199 arent even required for the major (though I think they are changing that).

When you take 198 and 199 they basically tell you that yuor high school econ class sucked and you are better off being a student with no econ experiance.

is debaser a reference to the Pixies?
