EC's for Med-School

hey what do you think would be the best EC you could do???? What do most colleges in the accelerated med programs look for???? like which would stand out the most form all your ec's

shadowing a doctor
research work
volunteering work at the hospital
attending a research program or a university in the summer
or some thing else!!!!!

i see a major problem in your post. You seem to be worried about what LOOKS good. Colleges see right through that. You need to find your passion and become dedicated to it.

Anything on your list will look impressive if you really make it into a passion of yours. If you want an example, ive done everything on your list but i have over 1500 hours of riding hours on an ambulance as a state certified first responder. Colleges saw this as my passion because i took one activity that i truly enjoyed and just put alot of dedication to it. It came easy for me because i loved what i did.

You seem to be too focused on the name of your EC. That will get you absolutely nowhere. I suggest you try out all of those things first, see what you like best and excel in that. Dont do soemthing because its what you heard colleges like to see. Colleges like to see ur getting something out of an EC and that you arent just doing it for your application.

IMO, i kinda find it hard to understand why juniors and sophomores in HS are looking into accelerated programs without any exposure to the medical field. How do you know you want to be a doctor, its like what can you base it on. All people this young really know about doctors is they amke alot of money and that they "help" people, that or their parents are doctors and there is a pressure to become one also.

STOP LOOKING AT THE ACCELERATED PROGRAMS right now, the only thing u should look at are the test requirements and grade requirements for the programs and not set your sights on them just yet. You need to learn more about yourself and why you want to be a doctor first. This is just my opinion though

i agree with doogie....but if anything for a med program, in my opinion, volunteer work is a must have since these days eveeryone has it, shadowing a doctor or research work of anykind is like the next level in a way....some people have it but not everyone.....my suggestion is to think of something that only a few people do......like picking up dog **** in a park if you have a passion for nature....something like that

everone talks about shadowing a doctor but what really is that and i live in new jersey and i don't know how to find research work here because most are over the summer and i'm not available over the summer so does anyone know of research programs during the school year??????????????

getting research work in the school year is kind of hard cause of school work and the research and you wouldnt work to the best of your ability in either one. however, there are research thing you could do over the school year...but you need good connections with people at hospitals, like my mom, a doctor, asked me if i wanted to do one at this hospital in central jersey over the school year but i didnt want to casue i get out of school at like 3 and the research was like from 4 to 9....ones over teh school year arent worht it

I am currently a senior applying to a couple of BS/MD programs. I did research over the past summer and am still continuing it right now. Basically, I called my local hospital and spoke with the volunteering department and asked if there was any research opportunity at the hospital. The person in the volunteering dept knew me well because I previously volunteered. He forwarded me to the pathology doctor and I got set up.

As for shadowing, I am currently shadowing a pediatric pulmonologist through this special mentorship program at my school and I am also planning to shadow him once my school's program is completed. It's basically the same procedure as getting into research, you call the hospital and you speak with either the doctor directly or you call thru volunteering.
