So I am entering my sophomore year at community college and have some EC’s, but just need some advice on how to spend my time. I have a 4.0 GPA and all my pre-reqs completed. I think my essays will be pretty solid as I’ve had my fair share of experiences in my life that I could write about to set me apart. I was very busy during the school year and didn’t have much time to spend doing E.C.'s but will have much more time as I only need 3-4 more classes to take before I transfer. So far the list below has my E.C.'s at my C.C. To supplement my app. I am planning on going for President/VP positions in the following clubs, adding some volunteer experience, and expanding a current business idea possibly. I feel like I need a little more to set me apart. Can you guys help me spitball a few ideas to solidify my app. What if I started a club at my school? Would it be too late to really start something during my sophomore year as I am prepping to apply that same year? So many questions!
EC’s:
Business Honors Society Secretary
Entrepreneur Club Member
Work 20+ hours a week in the Service Industry
Multiple Scholarship Recipient
Lots of Volunteering Hours for H.S.
H.S. Basketball Awards
Thanks everyone,
D
What you’ve got so far isn’t bad, especially with have a 4.0. Some sort of President/VP type position wouldn’t hurt though. The people you’ll be applying with are going to have some serious EC’s, so you really will want to find something to add.
What you did in high school doesn’t matter unless it’s something really significant, and what you’ve listed isn’t.
Student government is one of the highest sought extracurriculars as well.
I think I may be too late for student gov. for the upcoming year, but hopefully not. I’m just worried my lack of significant EC will be my reason for not getting accepted.
Haas is a very competitive program but honestly it’s not THAT hard to get into as a transfer student. The admit rate might seem dismal to you but in fact 2/3 of the people that submit applications are ineligible. A lot of them are applying as sophomore transfers from other universities (heh).
I will tell you this though, a lot of people apply to Haas and a lot of people don’t get in. It isn’t the end of the world.
Thanks man I appreciate your help. It is my top school, but I’m not going to put all my eggs in one basket.
You don’t need to be in student government, just finding a leadership position in any student organization is fine.
And Haas is still very difficult to get into this. I don’t believe they’ve released this year’s numbers yet publicly, but they received around 1,900 applicants and accepted around 100. More people are applying year over year and they take around the same amount of people each year. Sure, a lot of people probably didn’t have the requirements but plenty did and still got shut out.
Where else are you looking to go if Haas doesn’t work out?
Ucla, usc, uci, georgetown (school has a connection), ucsb, and ucsd. Maybe some other private universities but these are my main choices. Why do you ask?
