hello, i have a question, what do colleges look for in ECs?
do they look for volunteers and that sort of stuff, or will they equally value hobies?
I plan to pursue physics, and there is an astronomy club in my school. I will probably hold a top position and will work passionately - but will colleges value that, or will they value something like being part of an initiative to help society - like clean a lake?
What does the astronomy club do? We have a local amateur astronomy club that has many events where they take telescopes to show the stars and planets to old folks, elementary students, boy/Girl Scout camps, etc. they learn how to talk to people about what they are seeing. Showing the rings of Saturn to an 80-year-old who has never seen the “live” can feel very rewarding. Something like that might be seen as more valuable than just talking about astronomy over lunch, but you’d need access to home telescopes.
wow you do that? thanks for the idea
Colleges like whatever extracurricular activities YOU like. Remember, ECs are meant to be fun and engaging. Do you like cleaning lakes? If so, clean a lake. Do you like studying the stars? If so, study the stars. Admissions officers are smart. They know when you truly have passion for something versus when you’re just doing things for your resume. I’d recommend finding 2-3 clubs or activities you really enjoy and focusing on them. If you have a potential major you’d like to study in mind, try to find a club or activity that ties into that.
