I didn’t play on any sports teams until my junior year–but when I joined them, I didn’t do it for college admission. It’s a long, complicated story, but basically I wanted to prove to myself that I could play a sport. I ended up so dedicated to the sport I picked (water polo) that I went on to the swim team, coached the middle school team, and next year I will be the captain. BUT, how can I convey to the colleges I apply to that I didn’t do it for admissions, that I really did it because I wanted to? I don’t really want to write my essay about it because I have a more interesting life story in mind. What can I do?

interesting.. i dno

bump

Why don't you get a supplemental letter of recommendation from your swim coach? If they mention your accomplishments, you don't have to ;)

Bump. Even though I’m not the OP, I’m kind of in this same situation.

Why would an admissions committee think that you started playing water polo so that you could pad your college application?

You don’t need to cover up or explain anything. Write your essays on anything you want – preferably something you’re passionate about. If that’s water polo or an interesting life experience, so be it.

Glad you found an extracurricular you like. Enjoy your senior year and good luck with college admissions!
