ECs: Obligations Overload?

Okay so S has loaded up on a wide variety of ECs on campus. If there was a Finding Needles in Haystacks committee, I’d bet he’d volunteer. I don’t think this is a “looks good for college” effort. Rather, I think he’s simply a sucker for a great pitch. His grades are good, but my concern is that he’ll max out with all these obligations. My question to fellow CC parents is how much is too much?

Ask his advisor. Some kids can do a lot of things, all at once. If he’s one of those kids, bless him.

As he advances in seniority, he may be chosen to be a leader in one or more ECs. That would be the time, in my opinion, to ask him about pruning his EC selection.

If he’s passionate about what he’s doing, let him keep going. If he’s just doing it for show and his application/resume, tell him to whittle it down to only what he is passionate about.

Depth and breadth are a good thing, but passion comes through in an application.

Adcoms are smart - they can weed it all out and know the difference between EC “collectors” (i.e. resume boosters), and people who are just good at multi-tasking and like juggling lots of things. Also - at this age some students are “exploring” and “discovering” themselves. Which is okay too.

Great suggestions/comments!
