ECs

I am taking all of my classes at college (I am a junior in HS now), and I was wondering if it is too late to start ECs? The only thing I have to this point is some comm. service at a hospital & playing guitar for 4 years. What types of extracurricular activites look good to schools such as MIT or CalTech? Where I live, there is basically no opportunity for science fairs etc. but I can join things such as math/engineering club at my college and I am taking a lot of science classes not offered at high school (robotics, astronomy) and my math classes (by the time of graduation from high school) will include calculus 1-4, linear algebra, and differential equations... Assuming that I don't have a lot of ECs, what are my chances of gettting into MIT or CalTech with the classes I am taking?

SAT II Math IIc - 800
SAT II Bio E/M - 700
SAT I - To be taken in Spring 2005

Without strong extracurricular activites, kiss your chances good bye. In my opinion, to get into the top echelon of colleges, you need to show that you do more than academic work. Without a strong commitment to some activities, competitive schools like MIT will reject you in favor of the Student Body President, starting quarterback, math club president, and community volunteer of the year. I do not think starting extracurricular activities now will help your chances. Sorry, but MIT and CalTech are looking for dedication not resume packing.

would showing dedication, for instance 4 years in a club, match up to being president for a club?

if u were involved in many aspects and perhaps held a smaller position like secretary or treasurer

are there any alternate EC's other than school clubs that we can put on our application?

yea if u dont consider it a club; then sports teams....volunteering, research, out of school organizations, summer programs....etc.

I attended various programs at Penn State that were for science but they lasted for like 3 days. Should I even bother listing those. And, if yes where do I list those things?

well i would list them only if u think that ur lacking ecs otherwise. how active werew u list it if u can explain it in detail there should be a spot for it on either ecs on summer activities. btw if u have a chance can u give a quick glance at my post on my essay thanks a lot

What about summer classes at college (ie. Calculus III)? Do things like that help to make up for my lack of ECs?

no i rearlly think thats just for credit as classes taken that not really an extra curricular its not like an extra activity like debating.

Do most colleges consider ECs more leniently when you work 30+ hours a week?

Yeah they do.

I would recommend trying for Regional Semifinalist for Westinghouse.

Working a job is considered an EC. Working 30+ hours a week while maintaining top grades would be considered a stellar EC.
