In case ED I doesn't work out, is there a significant advantage to applying EDII vs RD? I am specifically looking at Carleton's EDII vs RD.

I would think EDII is more similar to EDI than RD, as EDII is still binding just like EDI. I don’t know specifically about Carleton, but Tufts considers ED and ED2 the same, just ED2 has a later deadline.

Their both the same. Some colleges like Colgate have ED2 and some don’t. It depends on the college

ED2 definitely carries an advantage for qualified students. Among equal students, they will of course offer admission to the one who says “If you admit me, I will come here.”

Note that qualified means that unless you are part of a special group, you at least fall within the mid-50 of the college acceptance stats.
