ED Agreement Question

I have decided to apply ED to Elon, and was going through the application and noticed in the ED agreement it asks me to list the other schools I’m applying too early action. Does this effect my chances at the other schools? If I get in ED will Elon notify the other schools I list and tell them to withdraw my application?

I ask because while I did run the net price calculator and it was affordable, but should for some reason the aid estimated in the calculator not come through, then I wouldn’t be able to afford it. But the ED contract says I can be released for financial reasons, so if it comes to that, I still want to have options from the other schools I applied too EA.

Thanks!

You need to be very certain you want to attend Elon if you apply ED there. Financially you are losing any potential leverage of comparing aid offers.

@ClarinetDad16 I am certain I want to go there. My concern is that the aid won’t come through, and I will be stuck without other options.

Don’t apply ED and assemble your options and choose the best fit (including affordability) for you.

My advice is pick somewhere you will be toward the top of the class and toward the bottom of your budget.

Every situation will be different - but my son applied ED a few years ago - was accepted - and also rcvd financial aid that matched what the net price calculator predicted. So - if Elon is your clear first choice and if the amount of aid predicted by the calculator works for you - I say go for it.

He only listed one other school on his Elon application. My understanding is they just want to see their competition - I have never heard of a college notifying other colleges of an ED acceptance.

@rockvillemom thank you! So if I apply and am accepted ED, I can send my deposit and not withdraw applications/turn down other schools until I get my aid package, correct? And if my FA were to be insufficient, I would just lose my deposit but still be free to pick from any other school I was admitted too?

Check with Elon on when you will receive the financial aid award letter. My son is going to be a senior - so my memory is foggy. We did send the deposit immediately as housing assignments are done based on deposit date. My son did withdraw all of his other applications in December - but I cannot recall if we had the FA award letter or if we did so based on what we expected from the net price calculator.

@rockvillemom okay thanks! I’ll shoot them an email and then come back and post what they say, incase it may be useful for anyone else.

I found a FA award letter dated March 12 - so looks like we did not receive it with the ED acceptance on 12/1 - which makes sense as we still had to do the FAFSA, CSS Profile and Elon FA application.

I would double check with Elon on this issue. I tend to agree with your last post, but an ED application needs to be handled carefully.

Hi, I’m a parent whose son is applying Early Decision this year, and in browsing other Elon info about ED, I came across this post in an elon admissions blog (from 2009, but still):
https://elonadmissionsdean.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2009/10/21/early-decision-is-it-right-for-you/

“In rare circumstances, we’ll receive withdrawals from ED candidates. This is problematic because it immediately tells us the applicant did not withdraw applications from other schools. When this occurs, we’ll call that school and leave to them the decision to rescind the admissions offer.”

So be careful what schools you list, and in general, using ED if you are unsure for any reason.

Agree. ED needs to be a well thought out decision.

It is no one’s business where else you apply. List just one other school on the Elon application - not all others.
