I am shocked that you were deferred; you didn't post your math and science courses, but with Spanish V and 9 APs, I assume you took a challenging course load.

Where else are you applying? Did you complete the optional supplement for W & M?

I am sure that MANY schools would LOVE to have you -- from the little you shared, you seem like a great student who is involved.

Linda,
I have to admit, I was surprised and very disappointed!!
My math courses include AP Calculus and AP Stats; sciences include AP Bio. I've also taken AP U.S. History, AP Gov't, AP Eng. Lit, and AP Eng. Lang. The university classes include a class at the 400 level, intended for college seniors.
I created a Powerpoint as a supplement, with photos and some humor (appropriate, of course) that I felt was missing from my serious-minded application.
Honestly, W&M was my top choice; I'll apply to UVA, JMU as a safety, and Brown as a reach, but I am still hoping for admittance to W&M.
Thank you :)

lg... I am very surprised. Is there anything you might skimped on with your application, that you could mail or add to your application between now and March?

soccerguy,
I'm sending in SAT II scores, as well as a letter expressing my continued interest and another recommendation letter or two. As W&M was the only school I'd applied, I spent a lot of time on the application and even sent in a supplement, so I felt that my application was as complete as possible. I'm definitely going to go back and review it, though.
Thanks for the post; I've still got my fingers crossed...!

Does anyone who is/has been deferred know how we're contacted, or when?? The vagueness of all this is rough!

lg... you will get another letter in late march with the people who did regular decision.

I know this is frowned upon, but if I was in your position, with your resume, I would try to get in contact with someone at the office.

did they confirm they had all your application parts? If they didn't (this is an excuse to get in touch with them), I would try to email someone (especially if you know who the person in charge of your area is), and just ask nicely if anything was missing, b/c you were slightly surprised that you were deferred, and you still really want to go to W&M and you want to make sure they have all the parts.

I would say call, but you will only get whoever is working the phones, not an admissions officer.

Definitely express your continued interest. I am puzzled.

i've been lurking around here and i kind of like my chances...i am regular decision (does that make it harder or is there not too much of a difference)..i got 2180/1490 sat..with a 89 gpa(my school doesnt do 4.0 but i guess thats like a 3.3) with a 110 weighted (i got the hardest classes possible 4APs this year)..im like top 6% with good EC's and essay and unfortunately i dont think my teacher letters will be great (my guidance letter will be very good tho) b/c im a slacker...

anyone get in or rejected with relatively similar stats--high SATs/lower GPA..any help is appreciated as this is my top school...im an out of state male which i am guessing hurts my chances..

correction...my gpa is a 3.4 and my teacher letters are actually quite good--based on 2 posts above me thats not too much of a reach--a 3.4 weighted got in OOS im 4.5 weighted and my SATs are dirty as hell...do u think w&m is that elite of a school...i guarantee u dont have an astronomical edge on me..u prolly barely beat my gpa and i got better classes and higher SATs

Why did you even ask people for their opinion if you are just getting defensive and jumping at people's throats? If you don't think W&M is an elite school, you should have no problem getting in according to your own opinion of yourself...

Either way Jam Fan, college admissions aren't set in stone. If you really think it is rare for someone with higher GPA and SAT scores to get rejected and someone with lower stats taking their place, you clearly have no understanding of college admissions. You seem to be so sure of yourself and your acceptance, why did you even bother asking anyone? You can think you are better than everyone because you have higher SAT's and better classes and a better GPA, but that isn't going to get you anywhere in life, so I suggest you change your attitude!
