I love being the observer on all these HUGE bets…always ends up with me getting something out the bet…whoever wins…yay:D

@firefliesdance

So the terms of the bet are —

 1. You say you won’t get any more acceptances and that I get into 3 Ivies.
 2. I say you’ll get one more acceptance at least and I won’t get into any Ivy.
 3. Neutral territory— You get another acceptance and I get into an Ivy/Both don’t get any more acceptances!

^All right??
So what’s gonna be the price?? :p

@quiver - no agents man :stuck_out_tongue:
Feel free to join either side :)

@rishav- Yes. Perfect conditions. How on earth do we decide on a price? o.o It’s not like we’re meeting up. :stuck_out_tongue: Um, suggestions anybody? Something we can do over the net?

the loser will have to record a video saying ‘I love justin bieber’ and post it in the cc group as well as here on cc.

This is the most brutal punishment i can think of.
Oh! You both just had a cold shiver down the spine?
I know its a scary punishment.

@quiver: I’m on your side :P

Oh send him chocolates :D

BTW, my acceptance (with almost full FA too!) has very conveniently disappeared from the list. :|

@Keya - Do add yourself to the list!! :smiley:
I don’t know why someone would’ve wiped you off the list, but just put it back on again!!

@firefliesdance - The price… There is codeguy’s suggestion and Keya’s suggestion, but lets wait until later today for any more suggestions?? :)

See…both of you guys are going to get into more than 1 of your ivies…I don’t think Im going to have that privilege…Do as keya says…but instead send me the box of chocolates as consolation…:stuck_out_tongue: That way everybody is happy(including me:))

I’m NOT doing that vid. OMG. I know I’m winning this but still. The prospect will keep me up nights. o.o
@quiver- You mis-typed congratulations as consolation. :stuck_out_tongue:
@rishav- Yes let’s wait till later today. :D

@rishav: maybe i’ll let it be for now…hoping for more acceptances to flaunt, by the end of this week :)

@quiver: I just love your ideas. Thank me for that compliment. Care to share the chocolates? :P

Oh and guuuuyyyyyssss!!! I just realised that my probability of getting into an Ivy is .52 (added up 6 ivies’ acceptance rates o.o) which is in my favour :D

sure:) The more the merrier…oh and firefliesdance…that was not a mis-type…that was auto-correct on my computer…filters all such impossible words…makes it more sensible;)

Oh and Keya…I have a better way of doing things …
The probability of getting a rejection from each university is 1/2…
So the prob. of getting rejected at all 6 is (1/2)^6…i.e 1/64…nah…not happening:)

@quiver - But these are biased events… In which case, the probability of rejection wouldn’t be 1/2 for any one college. :D

Any more ideas for the price of our bet???

these are independent…how is one rejection related to another??

LOL. Since we’re discussing the flaws anyways- both you guys are wrong at calculating the chances of acceptance. Technically, the probability you’re going to be accepted at atleast one= 1- (prob of getting rejected at all). Prob of getting rejected at all might SEEM to be = (rej rate 1)(rej rate 2) (rej rate 3)…
But actually the events aren’t independent. Good candidates like you guys have a greater chance of being accepted at an ivy. Someone who’s gotten into Harvard has a better chance of getting into Yale than say, a OK-ish student points to self. The rejection rates aren’t equal either. Someone with international awards has smaller rej rates at every college. Someone with terrible essays has much higher rej rates.

Adding the acceptance rates up doesn’t make sense. Multiplying them together would give you the chance of being accepted at all ivies. Adding them up leads to… nothing really.

Thirdly, even assuming the events are independent, the chance of rejection isn’t even close to half at any of these colleges. While it SEEMS that there are only three possible outcomes- waitlist, accept or reject- these outcomes are only mutually exhaustive and not equally likely. To accurately (or atleast somewhat accurately) predict the chances of getting accepted at atleast one- you’d need rejection rates for each college.

I have no idea what the point of any of this long post was; other than that I’m bored and like the maths involved. People! Come up with more ideas for the bet and I’ll go research rejection rates now. :stuck_out_tongue: :D

Interesting find: Assume you’re applying to all 8 ivies. Rejection rates are 90.4, 92.6, 83.8, 90.6, 94.1, 87.7, 92.1, and 93.2 for these colleges (look up the respectively’s). Prob of getting rejected at all colleges (roughly)= multiplication of these= 0.4521. Therefore, prob of gettin into atleast one = 0.549. Very VERY close to Keya’s number.

Interesting how you point to yourself;) Yeah…there are a few small flaws…but they seem to vanish considering the grand scheme of events:)

Maybe I’m a little below OK but it’ll make my point work for now. :)

Purdue Rejected. Can’t believe what happened here.

Rejected at MIT, Harvey Mudd and Vanderbilt so far. Waitlisted at trinity.
