Main interest is in medicine (cardiology; although I never had any experience in this field). I chose JHU b/c it has a nice environment, and it feels like home really. I want to have fun there, but as a pre-med I also care about grades a lot. From my college classes, I noticed that a state school can seem hard too depending on what type of professor one receive, so I just want to base my question upon this statement. JHU is amazing for a creative soul (which I am), but I want to make a good decision from the very start since I don't have a penny for undergrad, let alone med school. Please don't see me as a grade-hungry zombie/nerd (I hate those types of ppl) because i'm not. Give your honest opinion, so that I can truly write a whole hearted essay on JHU (if you guys think I'm fit for ED). TY guys :)

yes. ED is binding.
i dont want to be harsh on you… im just being realistic. with your SAT score and GPA, I think JHU might be a reach for you.
1990 is low… especially if you are an asian.
Competitive schools such as JHU doesnt just look at your weighted GPA but also your unweighted. In fact, they look at unweighted even more because there’s no additional points added to it. It’s your “pure” gpa.
3.6 unweighted and 1990 SAT would be tough… even for ED
But since you love JHU, give it a try.
With an excellent essay, you might have a shot. Nobody knows whats gonna happen.
Good luck.

Hi Polobear,

My daughter is a rising sophomore at Hopkins (also a pre-med). From what I heard from my daughter, Hopkins is an amazing school. The academics are challenging, that’s for sure. And you have work hard to earn your grades. But at the end of the day, you learn a lot. There are times when the students are stressed, but they also seem to have a lot of fun. If this is the environment that you strive for and feel that Hopkins will be a good fit for you, then I would encourage you to apply ED. ED is binding, however. So, you need to make sure you have a discussion with your parents about this. It looks like you will be needing financial aids. You may want to take a look at the [Financial Aid Estimator](<a href=“Student Financial Support | Johns Hopkins University”>Student Financial Support | Johns Hopkins University) on Hopkins’ web site to see if your EFC is affordable for you and your family.

With regards to your SAT score, yes, it is lower than the posted stats on Hopkins web site. However, there are a couple things that I want you to be aware of. (1) The Admissions folks at Hopkins take a holistic approach in their review. No single factor such as GPA or SAT or AP scores will make or break your application. If the rest of your application is strong, and if you truly have a strong desire to go to Hopkins, then go for it. (2) You can retake your SAT and I think that’s what you are planning anyways. Just something for you to think about. The first time my daughter took her SAT, she didn’t even break the 1900 points. She retook and I guess the rest if history.

Good luck with your applications!

I think if you love JHU, Early Decision for you. I also think, as others have said, that ED is your strongest shot - RD is just too competitive. GL!

my gpa is kindda round to 3.7…but yes in a realistic note it is on the low spectrum of admissions. I’m just really hoping that my SAT will go up, otherwise I’ll just end up at a state school working really hard and hopping that I get into a top med school.

Wealthofinformation: yea ED is definitely the only way JHU will be a reach for me, and that is why I’m applying. I know that if I ever got in (in my dreams), I would probably work my *** off there b/c I love learning from the best of the best. JHU is probably my dream school at the moment, and I’ve decided that nothing will stray me away at the moment.
Thank you guys for all your humble and honest opinions, they will certainly keep me optimistic and vigilent in my ED process.

Haha wow, asians dont have higher standards people

Ha ha… I thought the same thing when I read it.

I think the person meant that Asian are not under-represented minorities. So no bonus for clicking Asian!

Depends on what kind of Asian I think. Laos/Cambodian are definitely under-represented at top schools I think as well as Burmese. Just a thought.

haha. yeah i think i was a little vague about that.
and i agree with WealthOfInfo. well said :)
