ED "friendly"

Has anyone taken advantage of the ED friendly policy at RIT? Gone into the RD pool and later accepted (again)? Husband and I think that turning down ED is basically turning down the school, but the school doesn’t seem to present it that way.

We’re convinced RIT is the right fit for our son, but he’s still weighing his options. He got in at Drexel with enough money to equal RIT’s offer, so the 20K difference we were pointing out before no longer is relevant.

@fraidycat we opted for ED because of its friendly nature. We figured she’d have enough time to hear from other EA schools and to compare awards. She will be accepting RITs spot…it was her true first choice. What major is he going for? My daughter will be in Animation. She didn’t apply to Drexel because she wanted a BFA which they didn’t offer in animation.

I’d be afraid of turning the ED spot down and then not getting offered a spot during RD.

@NYCMomof3 My thoughts exactly - I think if he opts for RD, he’s turned down the school. He is Game Design. He has one more school to hear from (hopefully this Friday). We’ll be having serious discussions this weekend

When we visited RIT, the presenter was pretty clear that friendly meant that you are not bound to your commitment only if the financial aid was not enough for your family to afford it. There were several questions about it so he talked for a while. I would think that if you declined ED and then tried again for RD, they would not look at that favorably and probably not get offered another spot. Luckily there are still about 3 weeks to make a decision!!

@fraidycat I hope he hears from the last school soon. We have one more to hear from too (MICA) but her heart is with RIT and I’m just waiting to see the $$ so I can compare

I completely agree with MY3Nerds, We also visited and they made it pretty clear what they meant by friendly ED. I also agree if you pass on ED your passing on the school.

My husband was looking into this more over the weekend, I’m not sure where he found this, probably on RIT’s website or the forms we signed? He just screenshot it and sent to me. But it says:

  1. If the Early Decision applicant changes their mind about Early Decision, they can request to be moved to the Regular Decision plan. These students will be reconsidered for admission with applicants in the Regular Decision plan due to space limitations in academic programs.

He was looking into it after finding out we won’t know financial aid at my son’s second choice until next month, but we will not do this because RIT is his first choice and we don’t want to lose his spot. It does make it sound like they would have a lower chance of getting in with the second round. It also doesn’t say if they would keep or lose scholarships.

My son made the decision to go to RIT last night. He realized that he was holding onto Drexel because it was the first school that he visited that he really liked, but thinks RIT is a better overall fit. We’ll be making the deposit this weekend.

Wonder if anyone has already signed up for housing. Also - if you are on FB, there is an unofficial RIT parents page and a page just for students. I’ve joined the former. My son doesn’t do FB much so he hasn’t looked at the student page.

I am in this same boat. My son visited Drexel first and even spent a week there last year (actually stayed at U Penn dorms) for the Drexel Material Summer Institute. We have not visited RIT yet because honestly we didn’t think he’d get in. But we were notified this morning he did. So I guess we’ll be making a last minute trip to NY (from FL) this week. I really think RIT is a better fit for him.

@Reggi531 Good luck to you and your son with the decision. Did he like the week he spent at Drexel? Although I thought the program looked great (comp sci) and would rather visit Philadelphia, I think the campus and support services at RIT are a better fit for my son.

I agree. And he did decide bon RIT:)
