D plans to apply for CIT.
She is taking the pre-college program now and so far her grade is between B/A.
Her standard test scores are good (2300+/34, 800/790/770 subjects)
GPA is not that good, 3.10 (her school doesn't give extra for AP or honor but she did take all the most challenge courses)
Her GPA is on up-rising trend and she said will try her very best to keep it up this year.

She plans to do ED, but we don't know whether she should do ED I (11/1) or II (12/1)? She wants to show admission office the improvement of her GPA.
The fall term grade will be available around 12/11 only progress report will be ready around 10/20.

Since you noted we are talking about a female applicant…by all means apply. You never know.
You mentioned she’s at pre-college-- if she earns an ‘A’ in both courses (what is she taking?) then she should apply Early Action and I would think chances are very good. The worst that happens is that they hold her in the pool and wait for for first quarter grades (S knew two friends that happened to and they were held until the ED pool anyways).
EA has a huge acceptance rate…and bonus that we are discussing a female CIT applicant.
If she earns "B"s in Pre-college, apply regular decision.

Will not lie- 3.1 is a very low GPA for any school at CMU.
Standardized test scores solid-- where there any APs last year with “5” in sci/math topics?
What’s the ECs?

If cmu is her first choice, …by all means Early Action …but have an interview with Admissions before she leaves campus…highlight how much the courses this summer convinced her that CMU is the place to be, and focus on how well she’s done this summer - which will discount the low GPA in high school.

For CIT, her GPA is on the very low end of the scale. However, since she is female with extremely good SAT scores, it may give her more of a shot.

If she is committed to CMU being her absolute first choice school and if you are able to accept a low financial aid offer (CMU meets full need for ED applicants, but their formula for “full need” is significantly stingier than what most people would expect) then I would recommend that she apply ED.

mom2012and14 - yes, we do think about EA. Need to talk to her this weekend. I’m kind of worry if she will has enough time for the application, essay and recommendation? Read from CMU website, EA is due 9/1 (9/15 for recommendation, but her school starts at 9/11), it seems kind of rush.

I’m confused. I don’t see anything about EA on CMU’s website. Also, ED2 date is December 1, so it doesn’t give you the opportunity to apply someplace else ED1 and then apply ED2 at CMU if you get rejected from your first choice ED1 school. Am I missing something here?

EA is a choice only available to students who have taken at least 18 credits at CMU while in high school. Here’s the page about it: [AP/EA Courses - Early Action - Carnegie Mellon offers Courses for College Credit](http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/pre-college/apea-early.html)

EDII’s deadline does indeed come before you’d find out for an EDI school. However, I applied to Cornell EDI and was rejected, but had already submitted my regular decision application to CMU. so I called up CMU and asked if they could transfer my app to the EDII pile, as I had been rejected from my EDI school and was therefore no longer bound to the ED contract. They happily did so, and I got in EDII. :)

If you/your kid are planning to apply somewhere EDI and CMU EDII, just make sure your app for CMU is submitted prior to the EDII deadline and mark it as “regular decision” when you submit.

Early Action acceptance rate – now speaking only from anecdotal reports…is close to 95%!
But there’s probably a sample-selection bias (look it up if you don’t know what that is) …only those students who have solid records (would get in RD anyways), and did well in Pre-College apply-- it’s a limited/controlled sample. You would not apply if you got “Cs” at CMU. Reading over the 2014 acceptance thread here on CC and talking to my S-- everyone but one person he knew at pre-college who applied EA was accepted-- about 30 students (some applied RD). Everyone from pre-college who applied RD was accepted as well. Pre-college students appear to have has a very high acceptance rate. Anecdotal evidence-- not scientific-- but the only student he knew who didn’t get in, applied SCS, and had earned Cs over the summer at pre-college. You can turn around if rejected Early Action and reapply to another college within CMU. This student did and was accepted that way…but that’s a weird and risky thing to do…you need to be able to demonstrate in your application that you’re interested in the other major/college.

Hence, if your D gets two As this summer…I would say she is most certainly going to be accepted. If however the high school gpa at 3.1 concerns you- then wait for the first quarter grades-- and apply ED-- but that’s binding, and financial aid is not as generous when you have nothing to bargain with.

She should have an interview at CMU before she leaves (they do some this weekend too …right?) and ask frankly if her solid performance at CMU has demonstrated to them that she is capable of success at CMU despite the low high school gpa.

So what classes did she take over the summer at CMU?

mom2012and14 -
She took physics and history. Her grade is around B and A but she called during lunch today, said something happened about the assignment last week.
EA seems kind of rush but it’s up to her.
Interview, yes, she did it already.
Thank you for helpful info.

Thanks - But this link only refers to “early admission” ie students who skip their senior year of high school and enrol at CMU a year earlier than normal… That’s not early action.

Sorry, thought you meant early admission. CMU doesn’t offer early action only early admission to juniors, EDI, EDII and regular. You can check the application plans on the common application, click on supplements.
