Does ED have advantage at Upenn?
I am going to go ED

Yes, but only marginally so. If you’re not competitive RD, you will not likely be significantly more competitive ED.

I certainly hope so, I’m applying Early…

[Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile](http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/profile/)

These stats indicate that percentage wise you have a better chance if you do ED

** I’m also doing ED! Good luck to the both of us

Legacies who apply ED have a 2x greater chance. Others have a significantly greater chance also. Penn admits 50% of its freshman class ED. Apply ED!!

Hey guys, I had a question about this as well. If we can improve our application, mostly GPA wise, would it be better to go for RD? My GPA is somewhat low, so I think that I might be a more competitive applicant after 1st semester is over. However, I’m not sure if the advantages of ED outweigh a slightly (a lot more than slightly I think) improve GPA.

Shizzle, definitely apply RD. GPA is the MOST important factor in admission at Penn, and everyone that’s admitted ED will have a stellar application. Sure, ED does help your chances, but it won’t make up for a less-than-great GPA.

Go for it RD, but do emphasize that Penn is your first choice to your counselors and recs! Penn, like most institutions, does care about its yield!

ED gives you an advantage at any school…

you’d smash your head against a wall if you saw how crappy some of the hooked admits are

You’re right. I should have clarified that I was talking about unhooked ED admits.

can someone pls list some common ‘hooks’? i am really sorry but i dont understand what hooks mean?

Traditional hooks: legacy, URM (under-represented minority – these are black, hispanic, and native american), development (big donors or potential donors), recruited athlete

dammm but are u serious that only 100 ppl get into wharton without HOOKS?!? i have NO hooks except 1500+ of social service (is that a hook btw?).!

This is coming STRAIGHT from a penn admin, because they came to my school a few days ago.

Chances of getting in ED overall: 28%
Chances of getting in RD overall: 10%

Percent of class they take from ED pool: 45%

Is being a first generation college student a hook? But not a URM… Just plain old caucasian, haha

yes it is!

@Choklitain: “you’d smash your head against a wall if you saw how crappy some of the hooked admits are”

Who do you think is more apt to handle a school like UPenn, the kid who has 4 tutors for every individual subject and gets A+ on everything/ has a 2250 SAT, or the kid who has 2 jobs, makes dinner for their family every night, does tons of community service, and on top of that has As with a 2050 SAT?

Just something to think about for why those “hooked” (especially minority) applicants may have worse grades than the other “unhooked” applicants (mostly rich white kids) applying to Penn.

Though maybe you’d be correct in saying this about recruited athletes, because some of the dumbest kids in my grade are now in at Cornell, Brown, Columbia, UVA, and Colgate because of sports.

What about a first generation college student according to Penn’s definitions. (One parent no high school degree, the other didn’t dropped out of college) But well off, i.e. not applying for financial aid? Is this still a “hook,” per se?

Considering the majority of the unhooked don’t have tutors, I’d say the unhooked kid would do better at Penn. There are plenty of hooked kids that are smart; they should get in. The URMs with 1900s shouldn’t, though.

So you ALL recommend going for RD? Because I’m really confused. When I went to their tour, they said GPA matter, but transcript is much more important. Got that area covered. If I have a higher chance at ED I would like to do that. BUT, if a higher GPA will give me an even better chance RD, I’ll go for that. Thoughts?
