I have a similar situation. Low standardized test scores, but the recommendation/essays are good. I like your hook of URM and your interesting family issues, hopefully NU admissions are interested. However, I do have to say your EC is not very outstanding either.

Are you applying for WCAS and Bienen double degree, or just double major in WCAS? Because applying to double degree will give you a better chance as you sort of have 2 chances, either one you’re admitted, you’re in. If you’re heading for double major in WCAS, then your score is a little on the weak side, and apart from ur background, there’s isn’t much that shine to the adcom to exempt you from the low standardized test scores.

Aside from your test scores, I think you are a very competitive applicant. Your family background is extremely interesting, and your EC’s all look fine. Lots of leadership. GPA and class rank is there. Personally, I think you have a great chance if NU can overlook slightly lower test scores. Best of luck!
