Hi - I'm trying to figure out if applying ED will give a boost to admissions chances.
If financial aid is needed -- and stats are not super --- will ED help? Or will financial aid be better under regular?

ECs are really good, IB diploma w/ 3.8 uw, and 2100 SAT

Puma12, glad to hear you’re thinking about applying to CMC!

CMC treats ED primarily as a benefit for those 100% they want to go to CMC. Should you apply ED and get in, knowing you have a guarantee from CMC gives you security and one less thing to worry about come college time.

So, CMC doesn’t really give that much preference to ED applicants. ED does show you’re eager to go to CMC, which will probably help a little.

As far as Fin Aid goes, fewer McKenna/Seaver spots are offered to ED applicants (for several fairly obvious reasons). If you think you might a have a shot at one of these, RD might be a better option. If not, finaid shouldn’t vary too much. But check with Admissions and Fin Aid to get a more definitive answer.

One important note, if you do get any external scholarships, don’t send the money direct to CMC, they’ll just shrink your aid offer! Ask the scholarships to give the check directly to you and then pay off CMC’s bill.

You are supposed to report all your outside scholarships to your college. Most of the scholarship committees write the check directly to the school. If you do get an outside scholarship speak with the director of financial aid - they may be able to allow you to use the scholarship $ towards a new computer (if you need one) and/or apply some of it to the students earnings expectation. My D1 was in this situation and CMC was very generous in allocating the scholarship - since it was pretty big it exceeded the computer and students’ earnings so some of it was applied/credited against the CMC grant - which is fair - some came to the student and some went to the school (note the school has one of the most generous FA policies). I would recommend you bring up the outside scholarship after you have seen the FA package and “go to the top” in the FA department to get the best results.

They claim it doesn’t have a material fact, but it does. Especially as CMC is looking to improve its USNWR rank they are looking to improve yield and ED is a boon for that. Depends how much of an issue the FA is and how much you’ll need from them. As long as you don’t need to compare packages before deciding if CMC is your #1 choice and/or reach, go for it as it will help you.
