I know it's still early, but wanted to start a thread for those of us counting down 'til the notifications arrive. Good luck, everyone!

I’m not a parent, but I applied early decision. Very anxious to hear…

As the parent of an Obie soph, all I can say is “good luck.”

Has your soph had a good experience so far?

Very good experience. She loves Oberlin. I would say she’s had an outstanding experience but she was unlucky as a frosh—she ended up with the roommate from hell. She chose her roommate this year (a frosh year floormate) and it’s almost like heaven by comparison.

My D is a freshman at the Con and LOVES everything about Oberlin. She does have her car there because she likes to go to musical productions in the surrounding area.

Ditto. My D is a sophomore and at first was a bit reluctant to go to “Ohio” but she is in love. Truly adores it and that makes us very happy! She was in a COOP last year and loved that experience. Freshman seminars are fantastic and student body is very diverse and accepting of all. Lovely to see.

I’m glad it seems like everyone has had a good experience. I love the Coops and ate at two of them when I visited. If I do get in though, I’m not sure if I would want to live there my first year, because it might limit the freshman I would get to meet.

From what my D tells me, some of the coops get very cliquish. Example, a student from her dorm with a coop meal plan was regularly snubbed at meals by coop residents. That experience and others scared my D away from trying a coop this year. It’s like anything else. How do you know in advance which ones are good and which not so good? You roll the dice.

The great thing about Oberlin vs. most LACs is there are numerous places to eat on campus with a traditional meal plan. Unlike Swarthmore and some others of note, Obies aren’t stuck with one cafeteria. That was one of the things my D really liked about Oberlin vs. Swarthmore and some other places. She also liked the total absence of sororities and fraternities, and those dreadful “eating clubs.”

My D is a freshman at Oberlin and loves it. Between the regular classes the Con and the Exco, Oberlin has a truly amazing variety of stuff to do. She is not in a Coop, but the one thing she doesn’t love quite so much is the food.

My daughter is a freshman in Arts and Sciences and also loves everything about the school. She thought of living in a coop but decided against it and is now glad she did. She loves all of her classes, friends. And there is so much happening on campus she’s never at a loss for something interesting to do.

To add a student voice to the chorus… I got in ED three years ago, spent the next eight months with cold feet, then got to Oberlin and fell in love. It’s really an extraordinary school – and now that I’m studying abroad, I appreciate that more than ever! I’ve also been in a co-op since my first year, which has been a huge part of my college experience… though, like Oberlin itself, co-ops aren’t for everyone.

Good luck, momtobe and alohomora! I hope you get some good news soon.

Yes, my daughter was in Keep and absolutely loved it. She did not find it cliquey. This year she is in J House and eating at Third World and really enjoys that experience as well.
She did not find it limiting to be in a Coop her freshman year. Good LUCK!

Good luck, guys!

Thanks everyone! :)

Does anyone know when we’ll hear? I’m assuming before or on the 15th?

I was also wondering. Website says mid-december. My .02: they mail them on the 15th(ish)

from the 2010 common data set “Eearly decision plan notification date 12/15”

http://oberlin.edu/instres/irhome/www/cds/2010/

So perhaps they want us to receive them by the 15th? So maybe they already sent them out, or are sending them out tomorrow… :)

im getting nervous!
i wonder if we will get them tomorrow!

I called the Admission’s Office. They aren’t mailing them until Wednesday. :(
