PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton University has offered admission to 593 students from a pool of 2,039 high school seniors who applied through early decision for the class of 2009.

Notification letters were mailed to students on Dec. 10. The number of early applicants increased by 12 percent this year following the introduction of new Web-based application forms.

"I am delighted with the intellectual curiosity of the admitted students," said Dean of Admission Janet Rapelye. "Each student's academic accomplishments and personal achievements are outstanding examples of excellence."

The early decision candidates are expected to comprise 49 percent of the class of 2009, the same percentage as the previous year.

Fifty-five percent of the admitted students are men, and 45 percent are women. Twenty-three percent are students of color, up from 18 percent last year. Nine percent are international students. U.S. students represent 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Average SAT I scores of the admitted group were 730 verbal and 730 math. Of those ranked, 94 percent are in the top 10 percent of their high school class.

The University offers prospective students who have made Princeton their first choice the opportunity to apply through binding early decision, which requires that students not apply elsewhere and, if they are admitted, they agree to matriculate. Deferred candidates will be reconsidered with the regular decision applicants. Regular decision applicants, who had to apply by Jan. 2, will be notified of admission in early April.

The Office of Admission offered prospective students for the class of 2009 three new options for applying to the University: online and paper versions of the Common Application, a standardized form used by colleges and universities across the nation, and the online Princeton form. About 25 percent of the early decision applicants used the online and paper versions of the Common Application.

Thanks for linking us up, Forever Zero! This was very interesting.

Yay!

dot dot dot

hey, ilcapo's part of the 6% not in the top 10%

with 55% men, maybe women will get a bit of a boost in RD?

The story says the 593 admits will be "49% of the class - the same as last year".

But last year, for the Class of 2008, there were 581 binding ED admits and 1,175 matriculants.

why dont you get in a fight about it then byerly

Byerly, do you realize that 581/1175 rounded to the nearest percent is 49%?

Isn't Princeton increasing its size a tiny bit? That might be why they admitted...12 more people ED.

(tsunashima--byerly's point, I do believe, is that 593/1175 is 50.4%, so if class size stays the same, this year's ED admits would represent slightly more than half the class)

(byerly, feel free to correct me if I misinterpreted you)

yeah.. its about the same percentage as last year.. there is no way for them to predict the class size as accurate as to a single person.. so plus - 20 30 is resonable...

53 internationals got in.... how come so few from Canada this year :(

kids.. read this
"The early decision candidates are expected to comprise 49 percent of the class of 2009,"

EXPECTED.. so it doesnt matter... even if it were like 99% of the class size had the class size been that of last year, they are saying it will likely only be of 49% to THIS year's class

Maybe they'll feel the need to admit a few extra girls RD after that ED ratio....;)

They've had that gender inbalance for a few years though.

Notice how they don't mention the percent of legacies...

The legacy rate is always reported. In fact, Princeton is more forthcoming than any other school I've seen in reporting the number of legacies, applying, being admitted, and matriculating.

Here are the numbers for the Class of 2008:

http://www.princeton.edu/pr/facts/profile/04/08.htm

I know, but the percentage of legacies admitted is higher in the early round and I wish they reported that in this article...

Haha, Zant, so bitter...

Oh, Zant, it sounds like you need some chocolate! tosses Hershey's Mint Kisses through the computer speaker to Zant in NYC

I've been on severe chocolate withdrawal since the hol break ended, but I'm back on it again; started up tonight. Chocolate: the drug of choice for deferred applicants. ;)

i have a chocolate addiction, but i applied RD. i suppose there will be problems when im rejected

45% girls? man, i gotta start going to the gym again

haha, likewise.
