Regarding Early Decision - when does a student withdraw their other college apps?

1) Upon notification of ED acceptance
2) Upon actual receipt of financal assistance package
3) Upon student's official acceptance to that college by their ED enrollment deadline (made after reviewing FA pkg)

What if there's ED acceptance but delayed financial assistance information? Does student continue to regularly follow up with other college apps & ongoing FA document submissions until the ED college FA info arrives? If it turns out the delayed FA pkg isn't enough to attend ED college, couldn't the student be missing important deadlines that would still give them opportunities with their back-up schools? Assume ED college could be sharing ED info with some other colleges student has submitted apps to. When exactly should ED students officially stop speaking to other schools?

When you accept your ED offer of acceptance, you are required to withdraw all other pending applications and acceptances.

Your ED acceptance will have drop dead date for accepting the offer of admission. You MUST respond by that date.

woody – both my daughters (2012) were accepted to their ED schools. Both received financial aid awards within 2-10 days of their acceptances. I believe both schools named a specific deadline by which the award must be accepted. One of the acceptance letters clearly indicated that all other RD applications needed to be withdrawn pursuant to the ED agreement we had signed. My kids accepted both offers well in advance of the required response dates and withdrew their ED applications shortly thereafter.

The nature of the ED commitment is that the student agrees to enroll if accepted and is only supposed to decline if they cannot afford to attend. ED is not supposed to be used to make FA comparisons or to try to negotiate a better FA package.

Hope this helps!

There shouldn’t be a delay with ed and finaid. Are you experiencing some sort of delay? If all the paperwork was in on time generally the acceptance and the finaid come and there is a date to tell the college you are attending in the fall. At that point you tell the other colleges you are withdrawing your application or in the case of ea or rolling admissions that you will not be attending.

I understand the rules about ED in general. This is not a question of comparing offers from different schools at all. It’s a question about continuing to submit required financial info to other schools before their upcoming deadlines while the ED school’s financial
aid determination is still unknown.

I’m asking specifically about activities during the time in limbo between getting the ED acceptance and actually receiving financial aid information that apparently hasn’t been determined yet. Along with the admission letter, the college financial aid office sent a letter saying something is missing but with no further details and office was already closed for the weekend when letter arrived. So student can’t determine yet if ED school’s FA will end up being enough to attend the school.

In the meantime, there are looming deadlines to submit tax info/FA forms to other schools where apps have been submitted. This stuff was going to be sent out this weekend. If apps to the other schools are withdrawn immediately and then the ED school’s FA ends up making that school financially out of reach, those other withdrawals can’t be undone. None of them will make their own admissions determinations for several weeks but the submission deadline for family financial info to those schools will have passed before the ED school ever makes their FA pkg known.

So… should you still continue the ongoing process of submitting tax records to other schools before their final deadlines while waiting for ED school to finally send out details of their financial aid package? Even if the ED school’s missing info issue is resolved by end of day Monday at the earliest, the FA pkg will get sent out by mail again and some of the other schools expect to receive certain financial info by Feb 1, 2, etc. which is before student will receive the FA details from ED school and be able to make a realistic financial determination about that school.

There were no warnings or requests about missing financial info previous to ED admission and the online app status-checking info doesn’t mention any details either. Weekend admissions staff was zero help.

There’s no issue of comparing offers as the only offer at issue here is the ED one and it’s still unknown. Their FA pkg hasn’t been determined or sent to student yet so can’t be examined before the financial info deadlines at other schools.

Some responses seem to indicate student can or should continue following up application submissions at other schools until ED admission is formally accepted. But that can’t be accepted until the ED school actually provides details about their FA.

woody – I would send out the remaining items you were planning to send in support of the RD apps. If FA is required, it is not realistic for your daughter to accept her ED offer without seeing her FA package. Hopefully the school will be able to tell you Monday what the previously unknown missing item is!
