ED will not hurt

this is probably a really stupid question, but can ED hurt your chances?considering you are up against a probably more competitive applicant pool.

I would assume no, because if you don't make it in the ED pool you are deferred to the RD pool in most cases.

i mean in chances of getting accepted, not deferred or rejected.
are your chances slimmer as you apply ED because you going up against very competitive people?

As a current hopkins student excepted ED i would say that if Hopkins is your first choice then i highly recommend going ED. The acceptance rate ED is nearly 60% and it is my belief that the school really likes students that they know are committed to the school. I would say it is more difficult to apply regular with the much larger and very strong applicant pool.

I think it's better to apply ED if you're really sure. While you're still up against strong competition, there are definitely fewer since it's binding. At the very least, ED to JHU roots out ivy-hopefuls and

hmm.. wow thanks, I understand completely now. 60% though? are you sure? That would be awesome.

Just made my day :)

i wouldnt bank on the 60% too much since a lot of it is athletes and what not. but seriously, even if that were the case, showing the commitment by applying ED will help a lot. good luck jose!

According to U.S. News, it's 53%. However, laxfan04 said on another thread that the overall acceptance rates were not actually 35%, as we are led to believe, but I'm hoping that the ED rate is still 53.

in anycase, percentage wise....the ED acceptance rate is high. but the bottomline is that it's also quite deceiving.

simple answer to jose1's initial question - NO, your chances for admission are not hurt if you apply ED. You are correct that the ED pool is typically stronger, but because it is much smaller than the overall applicant pool, ED applicants are reviewed individually and not against an overall competitive pool.
The adcoms always say that ED applicants are reviewed the same way as RD applicants and are not held to any higher or lower standards.

Good luck.
