ED Williams, EA Notre Dame, etc

Hello, I'm submitting these soon - I'd like to know what you all think :)

I fell in love with Williams after a visit, so thats my ED.
I'm also EA at Notre Dame and priority at UIUC. So...here's a summary of my stuff

Large well-known public school (the people at the schools I visited are all familiar with it) / female / white / no financial aid needed / no legacy status
GPA: 5.71/6 (W), 4.92/5 (UW)
All honors/AP except for foreign language
(I've gotten two Bs, both were in sophomore math)

SAT: 770/770/780 (without score choice)
SAT II: 790 (lit), 770 (USH), 740 (math 2- only submitting this one to the ones that require 3)

ECs:
{Art stuff}
-Self-taught in computer-generated painting since 4th grade to present (submitting an art supplement)
-I work as an illustrator/artist for commission (huge time commitment, 35+ hours a week). I'm not sure if this counts as work experience since I'm getting payments, not wages, but there it is.
-I do auctions/fundraisers for the organization I volunteer for.
-Sophomore year to present I have been doing art classes in real media (pastel, paint, etc)

{Humane Society volunteer work}
-Volunteering at the HS for four years, around 300+ hours (I didn't keep track so I can't be more precise)
-Counselor for education camp (year round)
-Photographer for their website
-I've done fundraisers for a few years, auctioning art to raise money

{Publications}
-Yearbook photographer for two years
-Arts and Literature magazine editor for one year (also a photographer here)

{Violin}
-All throughout high school (started in 4th grade)
-Part of the "honors" section
-Won't be doing a supplement here

{Clubs}
-Political action club, national honor society club, volunteer-type club- admittedly neither are huge commitments but I enjoy both

[my ECs are weak, but I am very passionate about animal welfare and art, and hopefully that will come through in my essays :) ]

Awards: NHS, National Merit, National Latin exam metals (2 gold, 1 silver), Latin honors society, foreign language student of the month twice (does that even count? lol).

**AP Scores:/b 5's on all I've taken so far (Lang, USH, Euro)

The schools...
Williams (ED)
Notre Dame (EA)
Amherst
Duke
Rice
WashU
Northwestern
Middlebury
William and Mary
Emory
UIUC

(if you want me to chance you, ask, but I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert, for what my opinion is worth)

Oh and Dartmouth, too

Williams (ED) - Reach but you definitely have a chance!
Notre Dame (EA) - In
Amherst - Reach
Duke - Reach
Rice - Highish Match
WashU - At St. Louis or no? But you’re in.
Northwestern - High Match
Middlebury - Reach
William and Mary - In
Emory - In
UIUC - erm, i don’t know what this school is…
Darmouth - reachreach (they really do look at EC’s and leadership.)

The liberal arts pay a lot of attention to EC’s…so while your scores are awesome, you need to emphasize and play up ECs. Make sure your writing shines and you submit an art portfolio! You definitely have a chance at all of these and are qualified…the schools I said were a reach are reaches for everyone.

If you’d like to chance me back, I have a thread somewhere on the first/second page and I’d appreciate it. We have a few of the same schools.

thanks! UIUC is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign :)

Looked it up, looks like a definite safety. ;)

But you knew that.

So I’m thinking about backing out of ED and just doing RD at Williams instead…

hmm art portfolio might not work out…

I’m no longer doing ED Williams, just RD.

Good idea Ellie7. You are a very competitive applicant. Maybe apply to Rice EA so you can keep yourself busy/allow for more benchmarks. However, you are very competitive for Williams and should get in with a decent fin.aid package

Might look at Holy Cross-great Classics department. HC has nice location near Boston.

At Williams? I doubt it, since I wont apply for financial aide…I didn’t realize rice had EA, though, I’ll probably hop on that then

a family friend wanted me to look at holy cross, although I’m not looking to continue in classics, it seems like a nice school but I already am applying to 18 :x

Rice hasn’t had EA (or interim decision, as they called it) in several years. It offers ED only.

Ellie, you have extraordinary stats! I will chance you only for the schools I really know about:

Notre Dame (EA)–Match (in)
WashU–Match
Northwestern–High match/low reach (You can never be guaranteed for Northwestern, but you have a great shot)
UIUC–Safety (please don’t go here, you can do much better!)

I wish you all the best in admissions; you deserve to get into every school on your list!

William and Mary IN, and I wouldn’t give up on Duke either. That National Merit and National Latin helps. DOn’t forget to apply for the Latin scholarship since you are a medalist.

Thanks for chancing me. Unfortunately, I am not that familiar with your ECs but they seem pretty good. Your SAT/SAT IIs are great and your GPA seems pretty strong. The only thing you seem to lack is EC achievements at a higher level (i.e. national/state awards). You are a unique candidate and colleges love that so if you write a good essay I think you have a decent shot everywhere, but to be more specific, here goes what I think:

Williams (ED)-I think reach/slight reach, but I am not that familiar with the school.
Notre Dame (EA)-match/in
Amherst-same as Williams
Duke-slight reach
Rice-match
WashU-match/very slight reach
Northwestern-match/low match
Middlebury-don’t know
William and Mary-match (but I do not know much about the school)
Emory-match/very slight reach
UIUC-don’t know
Dartmouth-slightly more of a reach then Williams, but just slightly (mainly because of name recognition and it could go either way)
GOOD LUCK!!

Ok thank you!

Unless it’s a money issue, ED at Williams looked like a good plan. Don’t know your rank, but RD you start competing with a lot of Chicagoland high stats kids, whereas I think they would probably lock you in ED.

Its not a money problem, its more that I’m second guessing whether Williams is the right school for me or not. I was very confident at first, but now I’m not so sure…

If you’re not sure, don’t apply ED. However, kids with your profile will often benefit from an ED application to an LAC. They are going to take a certain number that look a lot like you on paper (full pay, competitive HS in area they get lots of apps from…) and applying ahead of the crowd helps. Many are holding out for ivies and many will end up not an an ivy or top LAC where an ED application may well have got them in the door.

Not trying to convince you, just a general strategy comment. I think the kids who are not sure they could be happy and not wonder ‘what if’ should wait.

My daughter loved Amherst with similar stats to yours. Decided not to ED and didn’t get in RD while a classmate with lower stats did ED.

My son watched this and with the help of a good counselor decided not to hold out for Princeton and applied ED to Dartmouth where he’s beyond happy. YMMV.

Everything seems great. The only ones that I think there’s even a significant chance of rejection at are Rice and Dartmouth. But that’s still wayyy better than the average person. Good Luck!!

That’s funny- what in part convinced me not to apply ED was realizing that I really loved Dartmouth, too. Dartmouth has sort of become my top choice and I thought about doing ED there instead. But I keep flipflopping and I’d hate to have major regrets…
competition from within my high school even will be tough…there are several brilliant students applying to the exact same top choices as me…maybe I’ll get lucky with crossadmits or waitlisting and make it in
I think in terms of stats they are better than me…although I think my rec letters will be very strong. GC said they were glowing and my love of learning and not just grades really came through, so maybe they can help set me apart
…okay I’m rambling sorry!
thanks!
