ED1 for international with financial aid.

I'm Mai Anh from Vietnam. My family can only afford less than $10k per year. So would applying ED1 reduce my chance to get huge FA? I wrote several letters to Admission office but haven't replied yet:(
I got 107 in TF and will take SAT1 this October; I have learnt playing the piano for 10 years and already recorded some pieces of music to send to the admission office. I also write articles for school newspaper, the leader of my group visiting the orphanage, translate English magazines into Vietnamese as a part-time work, join the exchange program in Bach Mai hospital.
I got several prizes in local and city Maths and English competitions for students, last year i got the second prize for the city English competition for senior students.
I love grinnell so much but wonder if applying ED1 will reduce my chance of getting huge FA.Can you tell me things that Grinnell look for its students, esp international students to get huge FA?
Thank you very much.

Anybody answer me please?:D

I don't know the answer to your question, but if you are appling ED, you are saying that you will go to Grinnell if accepted. Usually, the advice I hear is that if you need significant financial aid, don't apply ED. I'd expect you will hear back from the Admissions office or the finacial aid office. One thing you could do is apply RD, but indicate on your application that Grinnell is your first choice (if it is) and that you will surely attend if you can afford it. I doubt they would give you less financial aid if you applied ED, but you'd need to find out if you can get out of your contract to attend if you don't get enough financial aid to make it affordable.

why don't you try wesleyan? they provide this freeman scholarship for asians. i mean if grinnell is really your first choice, by all means, go for it. but if school fees can be a big problem for your family, why don't you look for some other alternatives as well? cause wesleyan is not bad as well. anyway, all the best! i am applying this year also. its really tough writing all the essays and stuff...

I don't think applying ED affects need-based aid, at least not in my experience. Applying ED shows you are committed to Grinnell, and if you are a desirable student, they will offer you a pkg that works for you b/c they want you to attend. Make sure you call or write to FA office and let them know your concerns - that you will not be able to attend if the FA package is not significant. I found them to be very understanding. My daughter applied EDII and received the aid she needed.

email the admissions office and ask if international students applying for financial aid can ED their school. Some schools, like carleton, apparently don't allow this. Then ask if they are committed to meeting full need of accepted ED applicants. They are the most reliable source for you to based on and make a decision. Best wishes.

Thank you for all of your advice:D

What LAC's are generous in giving out aid to internationals? (Except for those need-blind schools)

Hey Anh, what are your stats? I'm looking at doing something similar for Reed. Are you from TP HCMC, Hanoi, Nha Trang etc where ^^? Em noi tieng viet (abit ^^)

@Fiona: I'm from Hanoi. My stats: TF 107, GPA grade 11:8.8, SAT (will take in 2 weeks)

You from Hanoi Amsterdam? Hanoi Uni High Schol? Haha, forgive me for my inquisitiveness, just that I have a few friends. Good luck with Grinnell.
