ED2 Applicants?

Well, I just submitted my Carleton application. And given that the deadline is 10 days away, I'd imagine everyone else is either done with or completing theirs as well...

So, is anyone else totally nervous/anxious/excited?

asdfjkl; I’ve been dying to find a letter in my mailbox even though February feels so far away! I couldn’t be more excited/nervous/hopeful/etc. Good luck to you!

Good luck to you as well! I think my life in February will consist of carefully watching the mailbox… and not much else.

On an unrelated note, the temperature last night was -30 degrees…!
I live in the south. If I get in, it’s going to be quite the transition.

No need to worry. Only -8F for a low in Northfield, according to official records. You must have seen the windchill index.

^Yeah, that was the windchill (and those lows were in the dead of night).

On the bright side, the temperature when I woke up Monday morning was, according to weather.com, “-10 degrees F but feels like negative 33.”

GET EXCITED.

Our S reports that a highlight of his free time this week has been determining what temp is required to be able to blow bubbles and have them freeze in midair.

I’m from California and am currently enjoying 75 degree weather! Everyone thinks I’m crazy to applying ED to Carleton because its in MN, but I only applied to schools in the Midwest, so getting in or not does not make a difference. I’m still going to be crying the first time the temperature dips to the teens!

I remember reading somewhere that kids from sunny states (Texas, Florida, California, etc…) tend to acclimate pretty quickly because Northfield is sunny, too - the temperature is just very very very different.

Also, it looks like things have warmed up at Carleton since last week.

I was just talking to ds about this. He said it’s not as sunny as I’d been led to believe. But today’s sunny 32 is a welcome respite from last week’s frigid cold. Play broomball!

It’s currently cloudy with small ice pellets falling from the sky…not the best example of beautiful winter weather. But generally, there are lots of clear winter nights when you can see the stars.

Are there, in the winter, more cloudy days or sunny days? I did this search on a weather website, but it seems smart to hear the opinions of students or former students (or parents of students).

Mflevity, ds confirms that it’s “raining frozen rain.” I guess that means sleeting. That’s what I get for believing the online weather forecast.

When I visited, it was very gloomy the first day. I was so worried! - would it be dark all year long?? A student from the Twin Cities assured me, however, that MN has the most sunny days a year than any other state in the midwest. That’s good news, though it won’t help if there are still many dark days.

For average days of sunshine in a given month see list of months under “Sunshine” here:

Does anyone know when letters are going to be sent? The school website says “Before or On” the 15th. If it is not sent before, I might explode!! My friend applied ED2 to Oberlin and knows his letter is already sent. So jealous.

I was reading some stuff from (I think) last year’s batch of applicants on that very point. Most letters are sent USPS but some are sent FedEx. If sent FedEx, you’ll get a confirmation email and know that your letter has been sent. I guess all we can hope for is someone who is getting their letter via FedEx posting that they’ve gotten a confirmation email.
Nerve-wracking, and I’m torn on their policy of mail notification. The waiting is killing me.

To my knowledge, the FedEx is for the international students. Domestic students should expect the decision letter from USPS. I guess the decisions will be finalized this week and the letters will be mailed out early next week so the applicants will receive the decision by Feb. 15. Be joyful in hope and patient in waiting. Best wishes for all EDII applicants.

I was EDI and I got my letter in the regular mail! I think I got it on the 12th, so a few days early. Also, you’ll know online pretty soon after (it was up on the 14th of Dec). GOOD LUCK and hope y’all are Carls!

My child got the EDI decision letter on 12/13 (We live in the Midwest).

According to Carleton’s common data 2012, Carleton received 556 applications for ED and 216 students were admitted under ED. In 2011, 211 out of 416 were admitted under ED. In 2010, the ED admission rate is 207/443. ([Carleton College: Institutional Research and Assessment: Common Data Set (CDS)](http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/ira/basic_carleton_data/CDS1/)). Basically the ED admission rate is higher the RD rate. So, cheer up!
