EDing to Brown

I'll try to keep it short. I am from a public high school in New Jersey and am looking at Brown as my first choice. Intended major would probably be Public Policy or Commerce, Organizations and Entrepreneurship.

Stats in a nutshell? Weak GPA and decent test scores and extracurriculars. Reaches will be reaches.

It's all in the title. I'm from a medium sized (1,600 kids total) competitive public NJ high school that offers 10 or so APs and sends a plethora of kids to HYPMS each year.

That's about it. Essays will be strong, recs will be great etc. Will chance back.

Like you said, a weak GPA but not so much that it won’t get you in imo, esp. with a good SAT score. I think you’d get in. Chance back? (on first page)

Thanks;bump

Bump 10char

Once again. Bump

Most likely rejection.

Very significant reach. Both GPA and scores are low for an unhooked candidate, and being from an overrepresented state just makes it that much harder.v

It simply baffles me that a person with your credentials in regards to extracurriculars (which are quite amazing to say the least) would have Brown be considered as a reach. I’m not saying that you will or will not get in, I am not familiar with Brown’s acceptance policies and the New Jersey schooling system.

But looking down that page with all those accomplishments that you’ve made…

Again, it just baffles me.

The only thing I would ask is that if you are as dedicated with academics as you are with all the EC’s that you’ve done? Since college is going to mainly be getting good grades and expanding knowledge.

Have you visited the campus yet? Tried for an interview? etc… I’m no expert by any means, but from the information that I know an interview can be that extra step that separates you from the rest of the faceless applicants.

But, you do kick a$$ regardless.

Yup, like I said. If it isn’t meant to be, then it isn’t meant to be. Thanks for the opinions. I welcome more.

you have little-no shot of getting in to Brown. I come from a similar district, and your extras are decent. Not good, not great, but decent. Brown has a GPA cutoff, and your grades won’t cut it even with decent SATs (again, decent- not great or even good). You didn’t do enough extraordinary things to make up for your GPA and it seems like you have depth and leadership but only within your school and you made little-no effort to pursue real-life interests aside from internships with state congressmen and those hold little-no weight.

^Sounds bitter, but like I said earlier, all opinions are welcome and noted. Thanks for the input.

Definite reach.

@ecjunkie- we’re not out to grill people, but to advise in somewhat of a decent way. Like others have mentioned, it will be extremely difficult but not impossible.

By the way, a 2260 is far more than “decent.”

Your EC’s are interesting (Olympic tutor, intern w/ cong. cand., mayor, etc.) and impressive (MUN/ Debate awards). They sometimes admit like they are HYPSM when in reality they are not. They seem to covet athletes with very low qualifications academically yet someone like yourself has to be considered a reach. I think you have an outside shot, given your outstanding EC’s and strong enough SAT score. I would not bet against you on this one and, no, I am not taking this bet either. Yes, your GPA and SAT are lower than some applicants, but your EC’s make up for this to some extent.
