Education Expenses for Sibling on FA forms

Hi, all you FA experts! The forms ask what we will be spending on educational expense for other siblings during the coming academic year. Both kids currently attend public schools. I know we can't count college search expenses for DS1.

My question is: do things like AP/IB exams, SAT testing and other related educational expenses (lab fees, text books, etc.) count as expenses for my younger son? I wasn't sure if including these expenses for a student in public school would be a red flag, though we all know that "public" doesn't mean free these days.

Many thanks!

I would also like to know if the fees we paid for piano/violin/kendo lessons qualify as education expense too.

If your child attends public school, you do not have educational expenses. In my opinion (and it’s what I believe is allowed), this applies to those paying tuition for their students to go to school.

From PROFILE instructions online: “FM-135 Give the best estimate of the amount of money your parents paid or will pay towards 2007-2008 school or college expenses, including tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Only include expenses directly related to the student’s education, not to extracurricular activities such as sports or band. Don’t include amounts your parents borrowed or plan to borrow.”

I’m on hold waiting for a PROFILE rep for specific advice. Will post what I learn!

Thumper,
The PROFILE rep I talked to acknowledged that the directions are unclear, but indeed, the educational expenses apply to private school only. So, while PROFILE may think we incur no educational expenses for my younger son because he’s in a public school, my Quicken repoorts beg to differ. We pay for textbooks, APs, IB exams starting next year, required study guides, etc.
