Education Major: SUNY Cortland, SUNY Old Westbury, SUNY Plattsburgh, or Hofstra University?

I got accepted to all the schools listed above and I have no idea where I want to go. I will be doing College Visits soon, so that should help me make my mind.

Any recommendations, thanks!

Hofstra is private so it’s pretty expensive. The others are SUNY’s so the price is about the same. Old Westbury doesn’t have a great reputation, although the campus is pretty. My D was accepted to both Cortland and Plattsburgh for education. She got into the 5 year program at Plattsburgh and earned her masters as well. She loved the school so much that she convinced my middle son to go there as well. It’s a nice campus and I can’t say enough good things about the school. My D graduated the first year of the new testing and she did very well. She got a job with NYC DOE easily. However, after teaching for one year, she decided she didn’t like it so she now works with a bunch of other refugees from the classroom at an educational tech firm. Bottom line, Plattsburgh is a really nice school with a very good education program. My D is very happy that she chose Plattsburgh over Cortland and the other schools she was accepted to. As I recall Cortland had a really nice urban education program at the time that you had to apply for when you already there. It took 15 students and my D, as a white female, was at the bottom of the priority list for applicants (minority males, minority females, white males and then white females was the order. It made sense, but my D lost interest after that), so she chose Plattsburgh.

Good luck.

I totally agree with techmom99. Cortland and Plattsburgh have good reputations as education schools. Old Westbury is fine, but I don’t think it’s as good of an option because it’s not as good of a name and they aren’t known for education in the same way. Hofstra is a very nice school but it’s definitely not worth the difference in price. I kind of regret going to a private school for an education degree - it seriously did not matter at all in the job search process.

I agree with you, but Cortland does not have a 5-year program like Plattsburgh, Hofstra, and Westbury has and my problem with Plattsburgh is how cold and far it is. If I understand with what you are saying, the school you go to doesn’t matter then would it be a problem if I go to Westbury? Thanks!

I live very close to SUNY Old Westbury and I can answer any questions you have about the area. I don’t know much about the school but maybe the fact that very few students from my D’s former high school go there even though it’s so nearby. Hofstra is very expensive and the surrounding area is not good, although I do believe their education department is very good.

FWIW, one of my daughter’s best friends goes to Plattsburgh and loves it. She has not complained about the weather.

Cortland and Plattsburgh are your best choices.
Are you waiting on more colleges?

Just CUNYs

How about trying for Canisius or Hobart/William Smith or Manhattan or Marist? Run the NPC to see costs, you never know - they’d be as residential as SUNYs.
Between all your current choices I’d choose Cortland and Plattsburgh though.

My D is not a fan of cold weather but she never complained about the weather in Plattsburgh. They have a fairly long winter break from mid-December till almost the end of January, which keeps them out of the bad weather for much of the winter. They clear any snow pretty quickly. My D said that, if anything, they kept the dorms and buildings on the edge of being too warm. It’s also a fairly small campus and it’s walkable. The Amtrak station is 5 minutes from campus. My H doesn’t like to travel so I took the train up several times to see D.

The education program is really a good one. My D student taught in Manhattan and lived at home that semester. She was the only one of the student teachers who got a job recommendation from the teacher mentor and she actually got the job.

I honestly see NO reason to go into debt for a teaching degree from a private school when the SUNY’s are run by the Regents, who design the curricula.
