Should I incorporate being first generation into my essay. Also if my parents graduated high school in china does that still count as a high school diploma in the us

On high school - yes - if they went to school anywhere that counts and should be listed

Only write about being first generation if you have something to say about it that has to do with you and what you want to say about you–remember, the essay should show aspects of yourself that you think are important and will make the admissions committee want to have you on campus.

And yes, for the purposes of the application, high school is high school.

My daughter brought up the fact on her common app essay that she was born to teenagers still in high school. I would call her close to being first generation, Lol, I have a 2 year assoc degree and my husband has his hs diploma.

Don’t know if it will give her a huge advantage but personally I find it interesting she beat the odds ofw being born to teenagers. Hoping Ad comms will see it like that.

Meitou, I think you will have an advantage.

Thanks for replying. On my essay I talked about the hardships of immigrating from china And a little about how my parents never went to college, which lead to a low income and decrease in opportunities. I’m also concerned about what I put for my dads education. My mom has been telling me that my dad didn’t go to elemtary but went to high school, so I’ve been marking high school dipolma on the star testing surveys but I ask my mom to check and then she ask my dad and my dad answered that he did not graduate from high school what should I put? I’m not 100 percent though I think sometimes I out he went to high school and other times he didn’t. It’s just that I was raised up by my mom believing my dad went to high school

^I don’t understand why you’re concerned about whether your dad attended HS or not. The CA only asks about the college education history of your parents, not their secondary education.

I’m just paranoid. I Know it’s very common for families, especially those who come from a low income family to want their child to go to college

It’s a non-issue, let it go and move on.

lol alright thanks, I’m just a really paranoid person. Especially when it comes to something that could affect my future. I don’t want to put the wrong information.
