Is it important to mention that? If so, where would I even put it?

Either in your essay mention in somewhere (such as the UC prompt 1 asks for a description of the world you come from) or apply for a scholarship under the first generation student.

good suggestions... don't quite work for me. any others?

Many colleges' apps have spots for where your parents went to college. Just leave those blank and I think they'll figure our that you're 1st gen. I've heard it helps a little, but I'm not sure if I believe that.

Oh yeah! That's already on the common app. I'm so smart... they should totally let me into college = )

So...I have a question. My mom graduated high school, never went to college. My dad graduated high school, then went to several colleges for just a semester or class or so each, never getting a degree.

Do I count as first generation? I don't know what to put for my dad, since he just went to college for a little bit. I don't know which college out of the ones he attended to list for him...I think there's only room for one.

Contact the colleges you're applying to and ask how best to fill that section out.

I think that means you aren't a first generation, because the common app asks for colleges attended and then degrees earned. I'm not sure, though.
How much does it help to be a first generation?

i have heard that it helps quite a bit.

What do you put for that space if your parents went to school outside of the US?

i think you just put wherever they went. they dont have to be u.s. schools.
